Wheeler Co. Moves To 3-0
The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs football team improved to 3-0 with a big win over Portal last Friday night at home. It is the first 3-0 start to a season for Wheeler since 2004.
Portal got on the board first with a rushing touchdown with five minutes left in the first quarter of the game. It was the only time that the Panther offense would threaten as the Bulldog defense made adjustments that were successful. Portal had just 130 yards of total offense in the game, with 70 of those yards on their first scoring drive.
Leading tacklers for the Bulldogs were Jeremy Williams with 12 tackles, Tyrell Weeks with 10 tackles and 3 tackles for loss a caused fumble and a safety, John Bell added 10 tackles a caused fumble and a fumble recovery.
In the second quarter of the game the Bulldogs got things going on offense and picked up their first touchdown on an 18-yard pass by Jacquez Kincy to Quinshad Edwards. They added the two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead with six minutes to play in the first half.
The second touchdown for the Bulldogs came on another pass from Kincy to Brandon Smallwood, this time for 9-yards with three minutes left in the half. The two-point conversion failed, but Wheeler led 14-7.

touchdown on the ground by Kincy in the final minute of the first half. They tacked on the PAT to make the score 21-7 at halftime.
In the second half of the game with six minutes to go in the third Wheeler struck again from the air on a pass from Kincy to Edwards for 71 yards. That pushed the score to 28-7 after the extra point.
The defense then picked up a safety on the Panthers to put Wheeler on top 30-7 early in the fourth quarter.
The final score of the game came on a 27-yard run by Jason Culver. They missed the extra point, but it gave Wheeler the win, 36-7.
Offensively Kincy had 216 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and 35 yards rushing with 1 touchdown. Culver had 100 yards rushing and 1 touchdown. Edwards had 81 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. Smallwood had 105 yards on punt returns and 91 yards receiving and 1 touchdown.
This week the Bulldogs will be at Dublin for a test against the defending AA State Champions. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
