Bulldogs Fall To Raiders
It was an interesting week for the Toombs County High School Bulldogs football team as they had their initial game, that was scheduled against Mitchell County, canceled due to COVID. Head Coach Richie Marsh and staff found a replacement game for TCHS and they instead traveled to Dexter to take on the Raiders of West Laurens. West Laurens is a AAAA team with nearly twice the number of players as the Bulldogs, and those numbers definitely made a difference as Toombs fell in the contest.
Toombs had a big play on their first drive by Tyler Heath, a 44-yard reception from Chandler Lynn, but they stalled and couldn't find the end zone.
Later in the first quarter West Laurens found the end zone twice as they took a 13-0 lead into the second quarter of the game. They added their third touchdown on a 22-yard run. They tacked on the extra point for a 20-7 lead with just under seven minutes to go in the third.
Later in the third the Bulldogs recovered a fumble, but again had a tough time getting the offense going against the Raiders. Toombs punted the ball away and West Laurens fumbled the kick with Hunter Herndon recovering it for Toombs at the 49-yard line.
Toombs again stalled on offense and had to kick the ball away. The Raiders carried their 20-7 lead into halftime against the Bulldogs. Toombs got their only touchdown of the game in the third quarter on a long run by Derrick Mincey. Julian Marin-Vital added the PAT to make the score 20-7. The only other score of the game came in the fourth quarter from West Laurens as they took the win over the Bulldogs 27-7. Toombs never could get the offense going on the night as they had just 120 total yards.
This week the Bulldogs will be at home against Berrien. It will be homecoming for Toombs. Kickoff will be 7:30 p.m. with homecoming activities at halftime.
