Wheeler Co. Moves To 4-0

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the season by beating the Hawkinsville Red Devils 44-34 Thursday of last week. This is the first 4-0 start for Wheeler in 20 years. Wheeler's offense was clicking on the night as they put up nearly 600 yards of total offense.

In the first quarter the Bulldogs took an 8-0 lead and then got a big 47-yard touchdown run by Kenan Bryant on a jet sweep. They added the two-point conversion to lead 16-0. In the second quarter quarterback Jacquez Kincy connected with Brandon Smallwood on a 45-yard pass play that set up Wheeler at the Hawkinsville 7-yard line and led to another Bulldog touchdown. That put them on top 22-6.

Hawkinsville closed the lead to 22-18 with two more touchdowns in the second quarter, but a 43-yard touchdown run by Jason Culver extended the lead to 30-18. Later in the first half Kincy found Bryant on a 43 yard pass deep into Devils' territory, but the Bulldogs stalled and the game went to halftime with Wheeler up 30-18.

In the third quarter Hawkinsville again edged closer as they made it 30-26, but a 48-yard run by Bryant to the 4-yard line set up Wheeler for another score to go up 36-26.

Hawkinsville was not going away as they made it a 36-34 game in the fourth quarter, but a 49yard touchdown run by Kincy with seven minutes to go in the game sealed the win for the Bulldogs. Wheeler won by the final score of 44-34. Bryant rushed for 155 yards and 1 touchdown, Kincy rushed for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns and Culver rushed for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns. for 79 yards, Bryant with 4 catches for 74 yards, Quenshad Edwards with 1 catch for 53 yards and Josh Williams with 1 catch for 10 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively the Bulldogs were led by Jeremy Williams, who had 12 tackles and 1 sack, John Bell, who had 13 tackles, Tylon Gorham, who had 9 tackles, 2 sacks and a forced fumble and recovery. Smallwood had 2 interceptions.

This was the program's first ever victory over Hawkinsville. The Bulldogs have a very busy week as they traveled to Dublin on Tuesday to take on the Irish after presstime and will host Wilcox County at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
