Toombs Swept By Bacon
It was another tough week for the Bulldogs of Toombs County High School as they were swept by the Raiders of Bacon County in a three-game Region series. They played the first game of the series in Alma on Tuesday of last week and then were in Toombs on Thursday for a double header.
Game 1
Toombs threatened in the top of the first inning as they loaded the bases, but could not push any runs across. The Raiders through put together several hits in the bottom of the first as they plated two runs to take the early 2-0 lead on Toombs. Bacon added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Toombs finally got on the board in the fifth inning when Chandler Lynn reached base on a walk, was moved over by Chase Musselman and by Gray Stephens. Lynn came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Tray Harris, and then added one more with an RBI single by Alex Gordy. That closed the Bacon lead to 3-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning.
Bacon answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 4-2, and then held on to win the game by that score.
Game 2
In the second game of the series, and the first of the double header on Thursday in Lyons the Raiders got the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Neither team scored over the next three innings, but in the top of the sixth inning the Raiders plated two more runs to increase their lead to 3-0. Bacon scored two more in the top of the seventh inning as they took the game 5-0 over the Bulldogs.
Game 3
In the final game of the series the Bulldogs battled and almost made a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fell just one run short. Bacon got out in front early with two RBI hits in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead on the Bulldogs. They added a run in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0, and then two more in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 5-0 game. Toombs finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lynn came through with a sacrifice fly that brought in Foster Jones. They added one more run on an error to close the lead to 5-2. After holding in the sixth inning the Bulldogs gave up three more runs in the top of the seventh inning as Bacon was up 8-2 heading to the bottom of the final inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Bulldogs gave it their all as they tried to overtake the Raiders, but came just short. Kodie Cortez reached on an error and Lynn walked to put two runners on base. Musselman got an RBI single, Lynn scored on a wild pitch, and then Harris followed with another RBI single to close the lead to 8-5. Brantley Upshaw had a sacrifice that scored another run, and then a balk by the Raider pitcher made it 8-7. But Bacon shut it down there and got the last out, ending the Toombs threat and getting the 8-7 win over the Bulldogs.
But with those three losses that puts the Bulldogs on a six game losing streak and they are now 10-11 on the year and are 2-7 in Region play. This week the Bulldogs will battle with East Laurens in their threegame series. The first game was on Tuesday after presstime. They will play next at 5:30 in East Dublin on Thursday and then on Friday they will be in Lyons at 5:45 p.m.
