Wheeler Wins Over Lanier

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs football team got their season underway with a win over Lanier County, 33-14, on Friday. Wheeler County held Lanier to under 100 yards of total offense on the way to the victory. Wheeler had the lead early in this contest, as they were on top 13-7 at the end of the first quarter. It was the consistency of Wheeler that allowed them to pull away from Lanier. Wheeler added another touchdown in the second quarter to take a 20-7 lead into halftime.

In the third Wheeler again got on the board to extend their lead to 27-7. Both teams put a touchdown on the board in the fourth, but Wheeler took the win, 33-14. On defense the Bulldogs were led by Jacquez Kincy with 4 tackles and 2 interceptions. Adding to that were John Bell with 7 tackles, Tee Jay Wilcox had 7 tackles 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss, Tyrell Weeks had 7 tackles and 3 tackles for loss, Tylon Gorham had 7 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Offensively for the Bulldogs, quarterback Kincy had 210 yards passing for 3 tds and 65 yards rushing and 1 td. In the rushing game the Dogs were led by Jason Culver, who had 93 yards and 1 td and 1 recieving td. Brandon Smallwood had 124 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns.

The Bulldogs were very balanced on offense, rushing for 203 yards and passing for 210 yards.

Coach Thomas Smith said, 'Very proud of the team for our effort. I felt our offensive line controlled the game at the line of scrimmage, and on defense we did a great job of running to the football and playing physical.'

This week the Bulldogs will take on the Panthers of Portal on the road on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
