Samuel Lee Averett, 89, son of Mr. and Mrs. George and Carrie Averett, was promoted from earthly labor to heavenly reward peacefully on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, surrounded by family.
Samuel Lee Averett, commonly referred to as Sammie, was born and raised in Pittsview, Alabama. Sammie Lee was the fifth child of eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. George and Carrie Averett. He was educated in Russell County Public Schools. At an early age, he joined the Cool Springs Baptist Church in Cool Springs, Alabama, where he began his spirit-filled journey as a Christian. As a youngster, he was trained by his father in agriculture. When he became a young man, he left his hometown of Pittsview, Alabama, and became employed by the Seaboard Coastline Railroad (presently CSX). He retired as a supervisor after 41 years of service to the Railroad in 1989. Mr. Averett was also very well known as a Master Barber. He was the owner of Sam’s Barber Shop in Vidalia for 51 years, retiring at 80 years old. Many barbers were trained and licensed under his tutelage. His barbershop was also a ministry that he used to share with others about the
Gospel of Christ. Mr. Samuel Lee Averett was ordained as a deacon at the First African Baptist Church in Vidalia, Georgia. He served in this ministry for over 20 years in various capacities, including as Chairman of Deacons. In 1976, he relocated with his wife, Edwina Averett, to Savannah, Georgia. They joined the First Union Missionary Baptist Church. In this ministry, they were respected as servant leaders jointly serving in many aspects. Deacon Averett was a dedicated member of the Deacons, Mission, and Sunday School Ministries. He was integral and very active with Bible study and prayer services. Deacon Averett became known as ‘The Preaching Deacon’. He extended his Christian service to the Berean Congress of Christian Education.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Edwina Houston Averett, and son, Earl Averett. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted daughter, Shavondra Averett Ceasar; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Dennis Ceasar; sister Eva Alexander ( John) of Phenix City, Alabama; sister-in-law Ruth Averett of Phenix City, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
The Funeral will be held on Friday, October 15, 2021, at Sylvania Funeral Home; Savannah. Public Viewing 12:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.; Wake 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., in Mount Olive Cemetery, 121 Mt. Olive Church Road, Register,
