Lady Bulldogs Over Jefferson
The Toombs County High School basketball teams had a busy week as they took on Woodville-Tompkins twice and then played Jefferson County on Saturday. The boys fell in all three of their games while the girls got a win over Jefferson County.
Girls vs. Woodville
On Tuesday in Savannah the Lady Bulldogs had a tough time with the Lady Wolverines. Woodville was on top 15-9 at the end of the first and pushed that lead to 40-26 by halftime.
In the third Woodville kept up the pressure and led the game 58-35 heading to the fourth. Woodville took the win over the Lady Bulldogs 76-46.
Boys vs. Woodville
The Bulldogs gave Woodville all they could handle but came up just short in this close game. Woodville was on top 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, but Toombs came back in the second and made it a one-point, 21-20, game at halftime. In the third the Bulldogs took the lead and were on top 35-34 heading to the fourth quarter. In that fourth Woodville outscored Toombs 18-15 as they took the win, 52-50, over the Bulldogs. Toombs was led by Dominic Eason with 15 points and Maleke Day added 10 in the loss.
Girls vs. Woodville
On Friday in Lyons the Lady Bulldogs kept it closer than the previous game, but still came up short. Woodville led the game 17-6 at the end of the first, but in the second Toombs made a run and were down 21-16 at the end of the first half. In the third Woodville extended their lead to 33– 24, and they took the win over the Lady Bulldogs 48-38.
TCHS was led by KayKay Mobley with 23 points.
Boys vs. Woodville
It was a lower scoring game than Tuesday’s. Toombs held a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Woodville came back to lead 18-16 at the end of the first half. At the end of the third the score was 28-25 with the Wolverines on top. Woodville took the win over Toombs, 43-36. Eason led TCHS with 10 points, Day added 8, and DJ McKinney scored 7 in the loss.
Girls vs. Jefferson
The Lady Bulldogs got the win over the Lady Warriors of Jefferson at home on Saturday. TCHS was on top 19-13 and they held a 33-26 at the end of the first half. In the second half of the game it was 40-29 with 5:45 left in the third after a basket by Ziahya Griffin. Tay Howard got two shots to fall, and it was 49-36 with just one minute to play in the third quarter. At the end of the third TCHS was on top 51-42.
There was some controversy at the end of the third as a TCHS shot was counted at the buzzer. The Jefferson coach did not like the call and ended up with two technical fouls and was ejected from the game.
In the fourth TCHS was up 58-42 after a three pointer by Mobley, and TCHS held a 67-54 lead with just over three minutes to play. Toombs took the win 73-60.
Mobley led TCHS with 25 points, Aniyah Mckinnon added 16, Griffin scored 14 points, and Howard posted 12 in the win.
Boys vs. Jefferson
In the boys game McKinney got TCHS on the board first. Eason added a dunk for a 6-2 lead early, and Brantley Upshaw made it 8-2. An alley-oop from Day to Eason pushed the lead to 10-2 with 4:30 left in the first quarter.
Day and Eason connected on another alleyoop dunk for a 18-6 lead. The score at the end of the first was 20-6 with TCHS out in front.
But the rest of the game went the other way with Jefferson outscoring Toombs 14-11 in the second to make the halftime score 31-20 with Toombs still out in front.
In the third Jefferson closed the lead to 39-30, and then they came storming back in the fourth to tie the game at 48-48 to force overtime.
In overtime Jefferson took the win over the Bulldogs 56-52. TCHS was led by McKinney with 13 points and Eason added 12 in the loss.
This week the boys took on Wheeler County on Tuesday after presstime and the girls will play Appling County on Thursday at home at 6:00 p.m.
