BPC Basketball Drops 2
The Brewton-Parker College basketball teams were in Alabama last week as the women fell to Faulkner and the men lost to Mobile. The women then hosted and defeated Mobile on Thursday.
Women vs. Faulkner
Brewton-Parker Women’s Basketball traveled to Montgomery, Ala. on Monday night to face Faulkner (Ala.) in a rescheduled matchup that was originally slated for January 15. The Lady Barons (12-9, 6-7 SSAC) were downed by the Eagles (13-11, 6-6 SSAC) as BPC struggled with a second-half slump. “Today was one of the worst performances we’ve had as a group,” Coach Steve Edwards mentioned. “We were stuck in mud all night and we played uninspired. We won’t make any excuses and we have to give Faulkner credit.”
Faulkner opened the game with a bucket to take the lead early, but Brewton-Parker answered with a three from Keonya Mincey to capture the lead. The Eagles built up to a 10-5 lead with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter. BPC pulled the score back level with a 6-1 run, equalizing the game at 11-11 with 1:53 left. The Lady Barons reclaimed the lead with :35 remaining but Faulkner utilized three-throws to close out the quarter with a 16-14 lead. Brewton-Parker captured the lead in the second quarter to lead by two, early. Faulkner answered swiftly to pull back out to a four-point lead and eventually built to a seven-point lead with 3:50 left to play in the half. BPC fought back from the sevenpoint deficit to level the game at the half with the score level at 35-35. The Lady Barons outscored the eagles 21-19 in the second quarter to level the scoreline at the break. The Eagles came out in the third quarter hot with a dominant 10 minutes of play, outscoring the Lady Barons 23-8. Faulkner closed out the third quarter with a 15-point cushion, leading 58-43 with 10 minutes left to play in the game. In the fourth quarter, Faulkner held Brewton-Parker to just 10 points to secure the win, outscoring BPC by seven points. The Lady Barons struggled to find the basket on the offensive end of the floor and the second- half slump doomed BPC for the seventh loss this season, dropping the game, 75-53. Alexia Galloway led with 12 points followed by Angel McRae with 10. McRae picked up another double-doble performance on the season with 14 rebounds on the night. BPC shot for just 27% (20-of-74) from the floor and only 9.1% (3-of-33) from three-point distance. The Eagles outrebounded the Lady Barons 47-42 on the night. Faulkner gave up 13 turnovers while BPC gave up 11. The Eagles utilized those turnovers, outscoring the Lady Barons 17-9 off the giveaways.
Men vs. Mobile
Brewton-Parker Men’s Basketball traveled to Mobile, Ala. in a rescheduled game from earlier this season. The Barons (2-23, 1-12 SSAC) were dropped by the Rams (12-15, 6-9 SSAC), 80-57 on Monday night.
Mobile opened the game with eight unanswered points before the Barons found a threepointer with 15:53 left in the first half. The Rams began slowly building momentum into a double- digit lead with six and a half minutes left to play. Towards the end of the half, Brewton-Parker began chipping away at the deficit, pulling it down to just two points with under two minutes left. After a three from the Rams, BPC answered with a closing jumper to go just three behind Mobile at 33-30.
In the second half, it took less than three minutes for Mobile to pull away to a double-digit lead. Brewton-Parker managed to pull the deficit down to as close as six points with 15 minutes remaining but that was the best the Barons had for the night. Mobile quickly returned to double-digits and did not look back for the remainder of the half. The Rams outscored the Barons 47-27 in the final 20 minutes of play and closed out the game with an 80-57 lead. Aaron Udell led the way with 20 points on the night. The Barons shot for 36.9% (24-of-65) from the floor, 31.8% 7-of-22) from three, and 40% (2-of-5) from the charity stripe. Both teams were equal in rebounds, 35-35. Mobile recorded 12 turnovers while the Barons recorded 16. The Rams led in steals, 9-3 as well.
Women vs. Mobile
Brewton-Parker Women’s Basketball hosted SSAC foe Mobile (Ala.) on Thursday night in Gillis Gymnasium.
The Lady Barons (13-9, 7-7 SSAC) picked up a bounce-back win over the Rams (12-8, 6-6 SSAC) with a 74-70 performance at home.
“We found a way to beat a good Mobile team tonight,” Coach Steve Edwards said. “We have a ton of respect for their coaches and players. I’m proud of the way we fought late.” “We have to be better once we take control of games,” Edwards added. “We will get back to work tomorrow to prepare for Saturday.” Brewton-Parker opened the game in a dominant fashion by starting off with a 9-0 run over three minutes played. Mobile finally answered back-to-back jumpers to knock the deficit down to five. Eventually, the Rams managed to pull the Lady Barons’ lead down to just one with 2:55 left to play in the opening quarter. Brewton-Parker managed to pull away to a 10-point lead in the final minutes, leading 26-16 after 10 minutes of action.
To open the second quarter, Mobile knocked down five unanswered points to pull the deficit to five. Brewton-Parker answered with an 8-0 run to lead, 36-24 with 5:43 left in the half. The Rams were able to close out the second quarter by outscoring BPC 8-3 to keep the deficit at 10 points at the break. The Lady Barons came out of the locker room with back-to-back scoring trips to lead by 14 but began gaining some momentum with a 13-2 run to pull BPC’s lead down to just three points with four minutes left. The Rams came as close as two points in the quarter at the 2:19 mark with BPC leading 50-48, but the Lady Barons remained in control of the scoreline. In the third quarter, Mobile outscored Brewton- Parker 21-15 to make the score just 54-50. With 10 minutes left in the game, Mobile opened the fourth quarter with six unanswered points to claim the lead by two, 56-54. Two good free throws from Madison Evans leveled the game before a jumper from Micah Bess at the 6:55 mark helped capture the lead for BPC. The Rams regained control with four points, but Brewton-Parker was quick to level with Bess scoring from the charity stripe. The Rams answered with two free throws of their own to recapture the lead at 62-60, but an “and-one” effort from Bess gave the Lady Barons a one-point advantage with 4:45 to play. Mobile utilized a jumper and a three-pointer to pull away to a four-point lead with three and a half minutes left but Brewton- Parker did not give away further than a twoscore deficit.
Mobile moved back to a four-point cushion with 2:14 to lead, 70-66, but back-to-back buckets from Evans leveled the game with Bess giving BPC the lead from the free-throw line. Brewton-Parker managed to hold off Mobile for the remainder of the game, scoring two final free throws to secure the 74– 70 victory. Three Lady Barons scored in double figures with Bess leading the way with 20 points. Evans notched 17 points followed by Mayya Hopkins with 10. Off the glass, Angel McRae pulled down a seasonhigh 19 rebounds on the night with 15 on the defensive side of the floor. Despite McRae’s efforts, Mobile narrowly held the advantage in rebounds, 46-45. BPC shot for 34.4% from the floor, 28.6% from three, and 76.5% from the charity stripe. Mobile took advantage of turnovers as Brewton-Parker gave up 17 while the Rams gave up 11. The Rams scored 18 points off the Lady Barons’ mistakes. BPC’s win over Mobile on Thursday night breaks a four-game losing streak to the Rams that started back on Feb. 28, 2019.
