Rerouting to New US 1 Alignment Underway

Rerouting of traffic to a new alignment on U.S. Highway 1 outside of Lyons began on Tuesday, February 15, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced.

Motorists are advised to expect delays as traffic shifts continued from page

to the new alignment that ties in just north of the Whale’s Tail restaurant and just south of Dennis Sport Shop. Toombs Central School will be accessible via Highway 56 from the new alignment.

This stretch of the new alignment of U.S. Highway 1 is 8.5 miles in length. McLendon Enterprises completed the storm drain, grading base and paving and United Infrastructure Group completed the five bridges on this stretch of road.

The U.S. 1 project consists of four (4) projects.

Project No. 522220 – Appling County Line to George Hill Road Project No. 522180 – George Hill Road to SR29/Open Creek Project No. 522190 – SR29 to Green Oak Road (CR#386) Project No. 522200 – Green Oak Road (CR# 386) to Resmondo Road (aka By-Pass Project). The recently-completed alignment is included in the first phase of planned projects. The DOT reminds motorists to exercise caution, and reduce speed while traveling through work zones.
