Brewton-Parker Wraps Up Regular Season

The Brewton-Parker College basketball teams wrapped up the regular season last week. The Lady Baron picked up a win over Talladega while the men lost to #5 ranked Talladega and then fell to Dalton State.
Women vs. Talladega
Brewton-Parker women’s basketball traveled to Talladega, Alabama, to take on Talladega College for the regular-season finale on Thursday night. The Lady Barons (14-10, 8-8 SSAC) defeated the Tornadoes (16-10, 8-7) in an overtime thriller, 90-89 to wrap up the regular season before heading to the SSAC Conference Tournament next week.
“I’m so proud of my group tonight,” Coach Steve Edwards said. “We had multiple players step up big time tonight. This game was so much fun. Both teams made runs and both teams really wanted to win. We found a way to get it done in overtime. We look forward to postseason play starting next week.”
The Lady Barons opened the first quarter hot with a 7-0 run in the first minute and a half before the Tornadoes were able to respond. Brewton-Parker added another big run to advance the lead to 13 with just five minutes to play. BPC went on an 8-0 run to lead 15-2. Talladega managed to battle through the Lady Barons’ hot offense, pulling the deficit down under double figures to close out the first quarter. Brewton-Parker outscored the Tornadoes 25-16 in the first 10 minutes of play. In the opening couple minutes of the second quarter, Talladega found themselves just five points shy of BPC after going on a 7-3 run. Brewton-Parker quickly dealt with TC by pulling away to a doubledigit deficit just a few moments later, leading 33-23 with 6:49 left to play in the half.
The Tornadoes held the Lady Barons to less scoring in the second quarter, but Brewton-Parker remained in control with a 10-point cushion at the break, leading 43-33. BPC narrowly outscored TC 18-17 in the second period.
During the third quarter, Talladega turned the tables on Brewton-Parker by outscoring the Lady Barons, 27-18. BPC floated around a double-figure cushion for most of the quarter until TC began finding momentum with less than two minutes to play. After not giving much room to Brewton-Parker, Talladega closed out the third period on a 12-3 run to knock the deficit down to just one point with the final 10 minutes of regulation left to play.
Talladega captured its first lead of the night with back-to-back jumpers in the first minute to lead by one, 64-63 The Tornadoes followed up with another pair of buckets to lead by five before the Lady Barons were able to respond. BPC outscored TC 14-7 in the next few minutes to eventually level the game and reclaim the lead with 2:17 left to play. Both teams traded free throws to close out regulation with a 78-78 tie.
In overtime, Brewton-Parker scrapped to win over the Tornadoes by outscoring Talladega 12-11 to seal the win by one point, 90-89. BPC was able to get its lead as high as three points in the overtime period, but TC fought hard to remain in the game. Fortunately for BPC, Talladega’s second half was not enough to surpass the Lady Barons.
A total of five BPC student- athletes recorded double-digit points with Micah Bess leading the way with 23. Madison Evans notched 17 followed by Angel McRae with 15 and Cisley Copper with 13. Alexia Galloway gathered 11 to round out the Lady Barons in double figures.
McRae pulled down a season and career-high, 23 rebounds on the night another double-double on the season. Evans picked up a team-high five assists on the night. BPC shot for 41% from the floor, 25% from three, and 65.5% from the charity stripe. The Lady Barons dominated off the glass, outrebounding Talladega, 57-42. Brewton-Parker gave up 21 turnovers while Talladega gave up 17. BPC led 4-1 in blocks. Thursday’s win marks back-to-back victories over Talladega.
Men vs. Talladega
Brewton-Parker men’s basketball resumed SSAC play on Thursday night with a road contest against #5-ranked Talladega. The Barons (2-27, 1-16 SSAC) fell against the tough Tornadoes (24-3, 14-2 SSAC), 73-59 despite battling close for most of the game. Talladega opened the game with a three-pointer with Bryce Wilson scoring his own trey ball to level the game early. Wilson’s bucket from distance was the first of BPC’s 8-0 run to lead by five points, with 16:45 remaining in the half for an 8-3 lead. Four minutes passed with neither team finding a score until the 12:16 mark as Talladega scored to knock the deficit down to two points. The Tornadoes tied the game at 8-8 with 10:44 remaining before taking a two-point lead. The Barons answered with a leveling scoring at the 9:10 mark. BPC reclaimed the lead with a threepointer from Antrell Williams with just over eight minutes left.
Both teams traded shots down the floor, flipping leads. Talladega final gained some traction with a 13-4 run to lead 28-20 with 3:52 left to play in the half. Brewton-Parker answered with a run of their own, outscoring Talladega 10-3 with a minute left to play. Talladega managed to hold onto the lead at the half, leading 34-33 at the break. BPC’s final four buckets in the half came from beyond the arc.
The Tornadoes opened the second half by building to a five-point lead, but the Barons chipped away at the deficit and captured the lead with back-to-back threes from Aaron Udell to lead 42-41 with 15:31 left to play. After a three-point “and-one” effort from TC, BPC found themselves in the lead yet again from an Udell three with 14:36 remaining.
Talladega answered with a 12-0 run to pull away to an 11-point lead, leading 56-45 with 11 minutes remaining in the game. BPC went on an 8-0 run capped off with a three-pointer from Wilson to pull the deficit down to just three points with six minutes left to play. Unfortunately, Talladega began building a lead-up and ran away from the Barons’ comeback efforts. The Tornadoes built up enough of a cushion to close out the game with the 73-59 final score.
Udell led with 16 points on the night, 15 of which were from beyond the arc. Wilson and Williams also scored in double figures with Wilson scoring 14 while Williams gathered 10. Williams led off the glass with nine of the Barons’ 34 rebounds. As a team, BPC shot for 35.7% from the floor, 41.2% from three, and 55.6% from the free-throw line. Talladega held the advantage in nearly every category on the night. The Tornadoes outrebounded BPC, 36-34. TC outscored BPC, 20-12 in points off turnovers. BPC gave up 16 turnovers with TC giving away 14.
Men vs. Dalton
Brewton-Parker men’s basketball wrapped up regular season play on the road in Dalton, Ga. with one final SSAC matchup against Dalton State College on Saturday. The Barons (2-28, 1-17 SSAC) dropped the matchup against the Roadrunners (13-15, 7-11 SSAC), 69-61 after opening with a sevenpoint lead at the half.
The Barons opened the game on a 20-3 run during the first six minutes of play with Aaron Udell scoring eight of BPC’s points. Dalton State began chipping away at the deficit with a 7-0 run to pull within six points from Brewton-Parker with 10:31 remaining in the first half.
Brewton-Parker pulled back to a double-digit deficit as Antrell Williams knocked down a trey ball for a 29-19 lead with 6:31 left on the clock. After the Barons built to a 12-point lead, the Roadrunners closed out the half with five unanswered points to knock the deficit back into the single digits. BPC remained in control of the score at the break, leading 34-27. Both teams opened the second half trading scores down the floor with Brewton- Parker remaining in control of the score with a six-point lead just over three minutes into the half. Dalton State scored backto- back threes at the 16:09 and 14:32 mark to level the game at 42-42. BPC answered with five points, but the Roadrunners found five points for themselves to tie the game at 47-47 with 11:31 remaining.
Dalton State captured the lead with a jumper to lead 49-47. The Barons tied the game with a jumper from Cameron Cherry, but the Roadrunners utilized two free throws to reclaim the lead. Two buckets from Chance Hatcher and one from Udell gave the Barons a two-point lead with 6:10 on the clock. Dalton State found a way to pull back into the lead with four minutes left to play and did not look back.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a sevenpoint lead with a 7-0 run. After a bucket from Udell to knock down the deficit to five, DSC gathered five points in the final minute to secure the win by an eight-point margin. The Roadrunners ended up sealing the win with the 69-61 lead.
Udell led with 23 points shooting for 50% from the floor. Griffin Cherry also scored double figures with 12 points. Williams led off the glass with nine of the Barons’ 36 rebounds. BPC shot for 39.3% from the field, 28% from three, and 85.7% from the free-throw line.
Dalton State narrowly held the advantage in rebounds, 37-36. BPC turned the ball over 12 times while DSC gave the ball away just five times. The Roadrunners scored 50 points off the bench while the Barons only recorded two points from the bench.
Brewton-Parker will now prepare for the SSAC Basketball Tournament starting this week in Montgomery, Ala.
