VHS Indians Win 1, Drop 2 Games

The Vidalia High School Indians baseball team took on the Tigers of Metter on Thursday, Tattnall Square Academy at home on Friday night and then traveled to Grayson Stadium in Savannah on Saturday to face off with Calvary Day. The Indians dropped both games and are off to a tough start this season as several players are still in the middle of a State Playoff run as part of the #5 ranked Indian basketball team. vs. Metter
The Vidalia Indians evened their record at 1-1 Thursday night as they downed the Metter Tigers 13-3 in 7 innings. The game remained close through the first 6 innings with Vidalia leading 4-3 going into the top of the seventh. Vidalia exploded for 9 runs in the top half making it 13-3 and Conner Whited completed his 4th inning of excellent relief work getting the Tigers 1,2,3 in the bottom half securing the win.
Jordan Walden started on the mound for the Indians pitching the first three innings. Walden pitched well picking up 6 strikeouts, but the Tigers were able to scratch all three of their runs against him. In the bottom of the fourth with the Indians up 4-2 thanks to a Kevin Cox 2-run homer in the top half, the Tigers leadoff batter reached on a catcher interference call and Walden hit the next batter putting two on with no outs. Whited came on and got the first out on a sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third then gave up a hit allowing a run to score making it 4-3 Vidalia. Whited got the next two outs and then shut the Tigers down, allowing only one base runner over the next three innings, picking up the win while getting 6 K’s.
Vidalia’s picked up 9 walks for the game. The Indian offense was led by Hughes Graham with three hits and Kevin Cox with four RBI’s including a 2-run bomb in the fourth inning. vs. Tattnall Square
Tattnall Square came to Vidalia Friday night and beat the Indians for the second time this week by a score of 9-5. Tattnall Square jumped on top with 4 runs in the top of the first with a combination of hits and errors. They kept the Indians off the board until the bottom of the sixth when Bryce Davis scored a run making the score 4-1 going into the final inning.
With Vidalia playing four games this week and another game on Monday along with two pitchers still not able to play due to basketball, the Indians had to go deep into their bullpen in the top of the seventh inning.
The Trojans took advantage picking up five more runs on just two hits making the score 9-1. The Indians bats finally came to life in the bottom of the seventh. They were able to score four runs with big two out hits from Bryce Davis and Kaleb Bennett, making the final score 9-5.
Walker Moncus started on the hill for the Indians going four innings and taking the loss. Carson Ricks threw two strong innings of relief. The Indians used four pitchers in the 7th inning.
The Vidalia offense struggled through the first five innings unable to plate a run. The Indians finally broke through with one run in the sixth and four more in the seventh. The Indians were led by Kaleb Bennett with 3 hits including two doubles and two RBI’s along with Bryce Davis who had two hits and two RBI’s. vs. Calvary Day
Calvary Day beat the Vidalia Indians at Grayson Stadium in Savannah on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-5 in seven innings. It was the Indians' third loss of the week while picking up a single win. Neither team could get any offense going until the bottom of the 4th inning when Calvary punched across two runs with a walk and two hits. Vidalia went scoreless in the fifth, but Calvary was able to push across two more runs in the bottom half with a walk, a hit and two costly errors. Neither team was able to score in the 6th inning leaving the score at 4-0 Calvary going into the final frame.
The Indians offense finally came to life in the top half of the seventh when Hughes Graham led off with a long double, Walker Moncus followed with a single and Jordan Walden was hit by a pitch loading the bases with no outs. Kevin Cox singled home the first run, and Tucker Coleman was hit by a pitch plating another run while leaving the bases loaded with no outs and the score now 4-2.
Things looked bleak when the next two batters struck out, but Carson Ricks came through with a big two-out two-run single to tie the game at 4-4. Kaleb Bennett then grounded to the shortstop who committed an error allowing a run to score making it 5-4 Indians. The next batter grounded out to end the inning but things looked promising for the Indians.
However, Calvary had one more time at bat and they were not to be denied as they pushed across two runs with three hits to walk off with the 6-5 victory.
Bryce Morley started on the mound for the Indians pitching four innings. Conner Whited looked good again with two more innings of scoreless relief. Cox came in to pitch the final inning and took the loss. Hughes Graham and Kevin Cox picked up two hits each to lead the offense.
The Indians played on Monday of this week at Metter after presstime. They will be back in action on Friday as they take on Woodstock in Savannah on Benedictine's field. VHS will host Madison County on Saturday at noon.
