The Indians got the lead in the first inning when Hughes Graham hit a sacrifice fly scoring Jordan Walden, and picked up another run in the third when Kevin Cox got a bases loaded walk. VHS had another couple of bases loaded opportunities but could not get the timely hits to capitalize. Metter was able to scratch out four runs and take the win. Strikeouts continue to plague the Indian offense. Walker Moncus led the offense in this game with two hits.
vs. Woodstock
The Vidalia Indians traveled to Savannah Friday afternoon to play the Woodstock Wolverines at Benedictine’s Field. The Indians dropped their fourth game in a row, losing 4-0. Walden started on the mound for the Indians going four innings, giving up 3 runs and taking the loss. Bryce Morley pitched two innings in relief giving up one run.
The Wolverines only got six hits but they made them count. However, the Indians could not get anything going offensively as they only managed a single by Bryce Davis in the second inning and a single by Graham in the sixth inning.
The Indians couldn’t score in the top of the first inning, but the Wolverines got a walk and a long homerun over the centerfield fence for a quick 2-0 lead after one inning. The Indians loaded the bases in the second inning with two outs but could not plate a run.
The Wolverines added single runs in the third and fifth innings while shutting the Indians' offense down completely to take the 4-0 win. vs. Madison Co.
The Indian baseball team got back in the win column Saturday afternoon with a 13-3 walk-off run rule win in the bottom of the 5th inning. Moncus pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits and three runs to pick up the win. Conner Whited came on to get the final two outs in the top of the 5th inning. The Indians finally got the bats going and punched out 12 hits in the game. The offense was led by Moncus with 4 hits and 5 RBI’s; Graham 2 hits, 4 RBI’s, 3 runs scored; Davis 2hits, 1 RBI, 3 runs scored. Things didn’t start well for the Indians in the first inning as the Red Raiders scored a run on a two-out error and a misplayed fly ball to go up 1-0. In the bottom half it seemed that the Indians fortune might change as Graham slammed a 2 RBI double and Moncus an RBI single to put the Indians up 3-1 after one inning.
After getting the Red Raiders out in the second, the Indians went right back to work with Morgan Moye and Carson Ricks getting on with singles and no outs. However, a strikeout and line-drive out did not advance the runners, and it looked like the Indians might fail to get the clutch hit again. Things changed as Kaleb Bennett was hit by a pitch loading the bases and Graham followed with a two RBI single. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third Moncus lined a two out single to left putting the Indians up 7-1 going to the third.
Both teams went 1,2,3 in the third as did the Red Raiders in the top of the fourth. The Indians tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cason Banks led off with a walk, but when Davis bunted for a hit Banks was thrown out trying to take third on the throw to first. Davis stole second and then Bennett bunted for a single, Davis scored on some heads up base running as the Red Raiders left the plate unprotected. Bennett stole second and Graham walked. Moncus and Kevin Cox each followed with RBI singles putting the Indians up 10-1 going to the fifth.
After getting the first out in the top of the fifth, Moncus gave up a single and homerun. Conner Whited came in to relieve and got the next two batters out sending the game to the bottom of the fifth inning with the Indians leading 10-3. Whited got a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Banks and scored on a single by Davis, who then moved to third as Bennett reached on an error. Graham hit a ground ball to short reaching on the error as Davis scored and Bennett moved to second. Moncus then capped off his day with his fourth hit and fifth RBI for a walk-off run rule win.
This week the Indians took on West Laurens on Monday and hosted Calvary Day on Tuesday after presstime. VHS will travel to Callaway on Friday in Hogansville and then be at Heard County in Franklin at noon on Saturday.
