Indians Run Rule Heard

The Vidalia High School Indians baseball team dropped games to West Laurens and Callaway last week, but bounced back on Saturday with a win over Heard County. vs. W. Laurens

The Vidalia Varsity baseball team lost to the West Laurens Raiders Monday night at Greg James Field by a score of 9-4. The Indians are now at 2-6 on the year. Bryce Morley started on the mound pitching four innings and to one batter to lead off the fifth. He gave up three runs on four hits. He was relieved by Kevin Cox, who gave up four runs on five hits and a walk to take the loss. Conner Whited pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two runs on two hits. Carson Ricks pitched a hitless seventh inning to close out the game. The Raiders racked up 11 hits for the game including four doubles and a homerun. The Indians picked up seven walks but couldn’t capitalize picking up only four base hits for the game.

Things looked good for the Indians after the first inning. Morley got the Raiders on three quick outs in the top half. In the bottom half Bryce Davis led off with a walk, and Kaleb Bennett reached on an error by the pitcher.

After a fly out to left for the first out Kevin Cox walked loading the bases, and Jordan Walden drove in two runs with a double over the centerfielder's head putting runners on second and third with one out. Cox scored on a wild pitch with Walden moving to third. Caden Spivey then drew a walk, and Bryce Morley followed with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Walden. Carson Ricks followed with a double putting runners at second and third with two outs, but a ground ball ended the inning with the Indians up 4-0. The Indians could not sustain the momentum as they were only able to pick up two more hits over the next six innings. That being a double by Bennett in the fourth and a single by Morgan Moye in the sixth.

However, the Raiders began to chip away with a run in the third, another in the fourth and then took the lead with a big five run 5th inning picking up six hits including a 2 run double and a 2 run homerun. The Raiders tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to win 9-4. vs. Callaway

The Indians travelled to La Grange for a Friday night game with the Calloway Cavaliers on Friday, March 4. The Indians were shut out by the Cavaliers by a score of 4-0. Jordan Walden started on the mound for the Tribe going only two innings and giving up all four runs to take the loss. Conner Whited and Kevin Cox closed out the game with scoreless relief over four innings. Hughes Graham led the offense with two hits.

Although the Indians had six hits compared to the Cavaliers two hits, they were not able to put any runs on the board. The Cavalier pitchers did not put any extra runners on base with walks or hit batters and made only one error which was immediately wiped out with a double play. However, the Indians allowed many extra base runners as they hit five batters two of whom scored and walked five batters two of them also scoring. The Indians did have a promising start to the 6th inning as Ty Dalley led off with a single followed by a single from Hughes Graham, but it ended quickly as the next batter grounded out which was followed by two strike outs.

vs. Heard

VHS got back on the winning track with an 11-1, run-rule win in six innings in Franklin on Saturday against Heard County.

The Indians looked to be in trouble again through the first four innings as they could only garner two hits and no runs. However, Indian pitcher Bryce Morley shut down the Heard County Braves as well. Morley threw the first complete game of the year as he pitched all six innings striking out 7 batters while allowing only two hits.

After being held scoreless for the first four innings, the Indians broke the ice with four runs in the top of the 5th inning. After a leadoff pop fly out, Bryce Davis singled and stole second on the next pitch. Cason Banks hit a fly ball down the third base line which was dropped for a two base error, but Davis was only able to move up to third. Davis then scored on a wild pitch and Banks moved over to third.

Jordan Walden singled in Banks making it 2-0. After a ground ball out, Bryson Whited drove a ball deep over the center field fence for a two-run homer, upping the Indians lead to 4-0 going to the bottom of the fifth. The Braves did get one run back on a solo homerun to send the game to the sixth inning with the Indians up 4-1.

Walker Moncus led off the top of the sixth and was hit by a pitch. Kevin Cox followed with a single, and an error by the pitcher moved the runners to second and third with both scoring on a double by Davis, who moved to third on a bunt single by Banks.

An infield pop-up was misplayed for an error loading the bases for Kaleb Bennett, who hit a sacrifice fly scoring Davis. That left runners on 1st and 2nd with one out, but an error on the shortstop loaded the bases again, and another run scored on a walk to Dalley.

Another run crossed the plate as Graham grounded out leaving runners at 2nd and 3rd and Moncus at the plate for the second time in the inning. An errant pick-off allowed Whited to score, and a double by Moncus plated the seventh run of the inning putting the Indians up 11-1 going to bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Morley continued his solid outing as he sewed up the 11-1 win for the Indians. Whited, Davis and Walden each had two hits to lead the Indian offense with one of Whited’s hits being the two-run bomb.

VHS is 3-7 on the year, but they are now back to full strength as sadly the VHS basketball season came to an end last week in the Elite 8. They look to continue to improve as they move forward. The Indians took on Appling County on Monday of this week after presstime and will be back in action on Saturday when they host Veterans High at 12:00 p.m.
