Vidalia Over Benedictine
The Vidalia Indians baseball team was to play a three game Region series against East Laurens last week, but the Falcons forfeited all three games to the Indians. Vidalia was able to schedule a game with the Benedictine Cadets of Savannah for Friday at Greg James Field. It was a much needed game against a good 4A team to help the Indians get ready for the very important upcoming Region series with Jeff Davis this week.
The Indians beat the Cadets 5-2 in a well played game. Caden Spivey started on the mound for the Indians going 4 innings to pick up the win. Spivey gave up 2 runs, 2 hits and picked up 5 strikeouts. Bryson Whited came on to pitch the 5th and 6th innings, allowing no runs while giving up only 1 hit and getting 3 strikeouts. Jordan Walden pitched the 7th inning giving up no runs, 1 hit and getting 3 strikeouts to pick up the save. Hughes Graham led the offense with two hits, while B. Whited added a two run homerun.
The Cadets picked up a homerun in the first inning to go on top 1-0. The Indians got a two out double from Graham in the bottom half but could not plate the run. Neither team scored in the second inning, but the Cadets were able to plate another run in the 3rd inning without getting a hit. When the Indians didn’t score in the bottom half, that left the Cadets up 2-0 after three innings.
The Cadets didn’t score in the top of the 4th inning, but in the bottom half the Indians were able to get something going. Walker Moncus led off with a walk, and Jordan Walden reached on a fielder’s choice. Kevin Cox laid down a sacrifice bunt moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd with one continued from page
out. Moncus scored on a fielder’s choice by Banks with Cox moving to third. Cox then scored on a wild pitch. After a strike out, B. Whited hit a big two out, two run homerun to put the Indians on top 4-2 after four innings.
The Cadets didn’t score in the top of the 5th inning. In the bottom half Graham led off with a single but was forced out at second on a ground ball by Dalley, who then moved to second on a passed ball. Moncus drove him home with a double off the center field fence, putting the Indians up 5-2 after five innings.
Whited and Walden struck out 5 Cadet batters in the 6th and 7th innings to secure the 5-2 win giving the Indians a 14-9 season record and a 9-0 region record.
The Indians will play Jeff Davis in a very important three-game Region series this week. The first game of the series was on Tuesday after presstime in Vidalia. Up next, the Indians will travel to Hazlehurst on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., and then be back in Vidalia on Friday at 5:45 p.m.
