Vidalia Man Jailed On Multiple Charges
A Vidalia man who fled from authorities and ended up crashing his vehicle in Mount Vernon after a short chase on April 28 was jailed on multiple charges.
Alexander Gary Matthews was charged with Fleeing/ Attempting to Elude, Trafficking in Cocaine, Posses sion of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Crime, and Possession of Controlled Substance Near a Public School. Members of the Oconee Drug Task Force, Mount Vernon Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, who cooperated in the case, confiscated a number of drugs, including 93 grams of crack cocaine, from Matthews’ vehicle. The suspect fled from a Mount Vernon hotel and lost control of his vehicle on Raybon Street near the campus of Brewton- Parker College.
Montgomery County Sheriff Doug Maybin said that, while traveling on Raybon Street, Matthews struck another vehicle head on and was injured in the crash. Matthews was treated for his injuries and released from Memorial Health Meadows Hospital. He is housed in the Treutlen County Jail awaiting his first court appearance.
The occupants of the vehicle that Matthews struck were not injured.
