At the 59th Annual Lyons Youth Tournament, the 14U girls softball tournament took place at Toombs County High School. Lyons had a good showing as they walked away with the tournament title. In the first round of the tournament, the Vidalia Recreation girls dropped their opener to Long County 4-2. Montgomery County lost to Evans County 20-2. Lyons won over Appling County 15- 0. In the second round Long County topped Reidsville 12-4, and Lyons defeated Evans County 18-1.
In the losers’ bracket Montgomery County advanced on a forfeit by Appling. Vidalia took on Evans County and were on top 4-0 after two innings. VRD pulled away to win the game 11-0 over Evans. Up next was Reidsville and Montgomery, with Reidsville winning that game to advance.
Vidalia rolled over Reidsville in the next round 13-4 to move into the semifinals of the losers’ bracket. In the winners’ bracket Lyons and Long County battled it out with Lyons coming out on top. Long had the early lead, 1-0, after the first inning, but in the second Lyons went ahead 2-1. They held on and won the game 6-4 to move into the finals as the undefeated team.
That set up Long and Vidalia, with Long taking the win 14-2 to end the tournament for VRD.
The Championship took two games to be decided. Long dominated the first game, leading 3-0 after the second and pushing that lead to 6-0 in the fifth. They won Game 1 9-0 over Lyons to force a Game 2.
In the second game Lyons jumped out with three runs in the top of the first inning. Lyons added a run in the second to lead 4-0, but Long closed it to 4-3 in the bottom half of the frame. In the third inning Long went on top with two runs to lead 5-4 over Lyons. Lyons tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning, and then in the top of the sixth they plated three more runs to take an 8-5 lead over Long. Long couldn’t get anything going in the bottom of that final inning as Lyons took the win and the title 8-5.
There were only two teams, Lyons and Vidalia, for the District Tournament which was to be held at Partin Park, so both teams will automatically advance to the State Tournament.
