Indians Get All State Honors
After capping off an incredible season by the Vidalia High School Indians baseball team that saw them bring home the AA State Championship, the Georgia Dugout Club has named their All State Team and five Indians have been selected.
Bryson Whited got top honors across all of AA as he was named as the AA Player of the Year. Whited was an integral part of the VHS pitching staff along with playing at short stop, second base, and in the outfield. Whited was also selected as Second Team All State across all classifications by High School Scorebook Live.
Also earning First Team All State honors for the Indians was catcher Hughes Graham, who had a great season behind the plate. He battled through what could have been a career ending injury just a few years ago to become one of the top catchers in continued from page
Georgia during his senior season.
VHS flamethrower Caden Spivey was also named to the All State First Team. Spivey has a fastball that tops 90 mph and has committed to play for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He also was great on the defensive side of the ball as the starting short stop for the Indians where he used that arm to make several great plays during the season.
On the All State Second Team was the “Comeback Kid” Kevin Cox. Cox went through not only Tommy Johns surgery on his elbow, but then slammed into a pole trying to track down a pop fly which caused several more injuries. He fought his way back and became the hero of Game 3 of the State Championship as he held Thomasville to just two hits on the way to the 7-0 title game win. Cox hits in the mid 80's on the mound and was consistent all through that final game.
The final member of the All State team for VHS was Jordan Walden. Walden was also a staple on the mound for the Indians all season where the lefty throws in the mid 80's and has good control of his pitches. He also used his speed in the outfield as the VHS defense was a big key to their Championship run. VHS Head Coach Brent Korn was named AA Coach of the Year as he led the Indians to their first State Championship since 2003. Coach Korn came to Vidalia in 2017 after the retirement of legendary Coach Greg James. Korn won the State Championship with the Vikings of Treutlen in single A in 2016 before taking the position with VHS. Korn led this great group of 10 seniors through the loss of one season due to COVID, and then an upset to Lovett last season before bringing home the Championship this year.
The Indians finished this year with a record of 30-11 after starting the season 4-9.
