Montgomery Opens Applications For Board of Tax Assessors

The Montgomery County Commission has opened the application process for candidates to fill two seats on the Montgomery County Board of Tax Assessors. Board Seat 1 will have a term that expires on January 1, 2026, and Board Seat 2 will have a term that expires on January 1, 2027. All seats are at-large. Currently, these board seats are occupied by Macon Beard, whose term ends on August 8, and current Tax Assessor Julie Adams, whose term expires on September 27. Two more Board positions will be vacated at the end of the year, as Lendle Hamilton and Linda Page’s terms come to a conclusion. The new Board members will receive staggered term expiration dates as part of an effort to ensure that members of the Board are not replaced at the same time. The Board of Commissioners came to the decision to create these staggered terms to avoid having a majority of inexperienced Board members on the Board at one time.

Individuals who wish to apply for these positions must meet three guidelines: they must be at least 21 years of age, make their residence within the county within six months after taking the oath of office as a member of the Board, and have earned at least a high school diploma. Once appointed, these new Board members must have successfully completed 40 hours of training within 180 days of appointment. An additional 40 hours of training must be completed every two calendar years of membership on the Board. These individuals should also have obtained and maintained a certificate issued by the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Revenue. The Board of Tax Assessors meets the third Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. at the Montgomery County Board of Tax Assessors’ Office, which is located at 303 South Richardson Street in Mount Vernon. Each Board member is compensated $50 per meeting and reimbursed for all expenses associated with Board duties. Those interested may pick up an application and criminal history release form at the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners’ Office, located at 310 West Broad Street in Mount Vernon, or download the forms online at www.montcoga.gov. Applications may be dropped off in person at the Board of Commissioners’ Office or mailed to Montgomery County BOC, PO Box 295, Mount Vernon, GA 30445.

Applications are due by Friday, July 1. For more information, contact Montgomery County Manager Brandon Braddy at 912-583-2363.
