Crusaders Have Good Outing Against Valwood
The Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders football team was at Valwood School to take on the Valiants on Friday night and played well against a much larger opponent. Valwood took the field with over 50 players while the Crusaders field just 25, but RTCA battled and had a good showing.
Valwood scored their first of five touchdowns in the first half on a four- yard run at the 8:51 mark in the first quarter. The twopoint conversion was good for an 8-0 lead. RTCA scored on their next offensive possession when Aaron Hankerson took a handoff from quarterback T.J. Stanley on a fourth down fake punt and went 67-yards into the end zone. Kicker Justin Bowers made the PAT to close the lead to 8-7.
The Valiants scored two more times in the first period on runs of 59 and 12 yards. They converted the two-point conversion on each touchdown to lead 24-7 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter after a Crusaders fumble, Valwood scored on an 8-yard run with 6:15 remaining. The two-point conversion was good to make the score 32-7 Valiants.
On the ensuing kickoff, Hankerson scored his second touchdown of the game when he ran it all the way back from 72-yards out. Bowers made the PAT to cut the Valwood lead to 32-14 at the half. Neither team scored in the third quarter. In the fourth period Stanley hit Jashaun Powell with a touchdown pass from 33-yards out with 6:00 left in the game. PAT was no good, but that closed it to 32-20 with the Valiants still in front.
Valwood added another touchdown on a 60yard run with 3:33 remaining. The two-point conversion was good. Valwood increased their lead to 4020.
The Crusaders scored with just 2:12 left in the game on a touchdown pass from Stanley to Hankerson from 20-yards out. The two-point conversion was good to make the final score of the game 40-28, with Valwood taking the win.
RTCA falls to 2-3 on the season while Valwood improves to 4-0. The Crusaders are on the road again to Valdosta this Friday night to play Georgia Christian. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
