Upon discovering Diaz, jailers immediately began CPR and alerted the jail nursing staff to the incident. 911 Dispatch requested help from Toombs- Montgomery Emergency Management Services (EMS) as the group continued to perform CPR on the inmate. When EMS arrived, paramedics assessed Diaz and determined she could not be resuscitated.
Although the GBI was brought in upon the determination of Diaz’s death to investigate the incident, the cause of death does not seem to be suspicious in nature, according to the TCSO. At this time, it is believed that Diaz died of natural causes, which stemmed from ongoing health issues.
An autopsy will be completed and a Coroner’s Inquiry will be conducted to review the findings of this investigation, which is currently still active. Once completed, the GBI will turn its findings over to the Sheriff and Middle Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further actions.
