MoCo Commission Approves $1.2M Contract for Sheriff’s Office Upgrade
The Montgomery County Commission, in its regular session on December 12, awarded a bid and contact to C. Merrill Construction, LLC, of Statesboro, for the amount of $1,2 million for additions and modifications to the Sheriff’s Office on East Broad Street in downtown Mount Vernon.
The Commission also approved transferring $400,000 from the General Fund to the County’s Capital Project Fund to finance Public Safety building projects.
In other business, the Commission adopted a resolution for a USDA Rural Development Loan to purchase a John Deere tractor with a grant amount of $27,400. The Commission adopted a second resolution for a USDA Rural Development Loan to finance the tractor with a loan amount of $50,900, to cover the vehicle’s full purchase price.
The Commissioners conducted the first reading of a resolution to amend a section of continued from page
the County Code regarding nuisance animals. The amendment provides more detailed definitions of animals covered in the code.
The Commission also adopted a resolution to authorize the Montgomery County Health Department to charge an administrative review fee and inspection fee on mobile food service establishments that request authorization to operate. This action was taken in compliance with a state law that takes effect on January 1.
Appointments
The Commission approved the following appointments: Tony Baker, incumbent, to the Montgomery County Development Authority to represent District 1 Militia District for a five-year term; Eric Williams to the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Regional Commission for a one-year term; Alex Fountain to the Montgomery County Board of Health to complete the unexpired term of the late Mildred Tuck; Braxton Parks to the Montgomery County Board of Health. The Commission approved the renewal of the County Worker’s Compensation with ACCGGSIWCF in the amount of $53,405, and a preliminary engineering cost reimbursement agreement with the Heart of Georgia Railroad in the amount of $8,675 to perform an engineering review of improvements for a railroad crossing near the proposed EMS building site on Earthsaver Road.
Also approved by the Commission was a renewal of the emergency medical services agreement in the amount of $236,903.47. Other Matters/Reports
The County approved a request from Samuel Baker to rename a segment of Bob Sharpe Road as Baker Road pending any objections from residents who reside on the road.
EMS Director Drew James reported that his department answered 85 calls during November. He also announced a car seat class that will be offered to Montgomery County residents on January 1012 at the Higgston Fire Department on 310 James Street in Higgston. There are 10 slots available and those interested in attending are asked to register by calling 912-403-9882. The event is being sponsored by Safe Kids Toombs, the Georgia Department of Public Health, the Higgston Fire Department, and the Toombs-Montgomery EMS.
EMA Director Donnie Daniels reported that his agency answered 17 fire calls during the previous month, and is in the process of completing upgrades to the department’s rescue boat.
Public Works Director Milton Fountain reported that the county’s annual scrap tire collection had a slow start on its first day of operation, but he expects the collection rate to climb by the end of the campaign. He said county crews will collect discarded tires on county roads. He also told Commissioners that the County Board of Health is in the process of building a tornado shelter on its premises. The shelter was funded through a state grant and will accommodate 6 to 8 people.
