Vikings Fall In First Round
It was a tough first round draw for both the Vikings and Lady Vikings of Treutlen County High School in the first round of the GHSA State A Division II Basketball Playoffs. The Lady Vikings had to take on the #3 ranked team in the state, Montgomery County, while the boys also had to face the #3 ranked team in the Panthers of Portal.
Girls vs. Montgomery
It was a slow start for both teams as it took nearly three minutes for either team to score. The Lady Eagles scored the first points and built up a 6-0 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter. MCHS had it at 8-0 before Treutlen finally got on the board. The Vikings closed it to 8-5 with a threepointer from Zaleria Miller. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 12-7 with MCHS out in front.
Early in the second quarter Kirsten Miller closed it to 12-9, and it was 14-12 after another three by Miller. MCHS increased their lead to 18-12, but the Vikings came back and it was 20-16. JaNerriah Lovett made it 20-19 with 3:08 left in the first half.
The Vikings took a 2220 lead, but the Lady Eagles hit a shot with 2 seconds left in the first half to take a 23-22 lead in to halftime.
In the third quarter the Lady Eagles got on track as they outscored Treutlen 15-8 to take a 38-30 lead to the fourth. In that fourth MCHS pulled away and took the win, 55-37.
The Lady Vikings were led by Miller with 15 points. Treutlen finished the season with a record of 11-15.
Boys vs. Portal
The boys also gave the #3 team in the state a run. Portal did come out and take an early lead, and were on top 16-8 at the end of the first quarter. Treutlen didn't make up any ground in the second, but they held with Portal. The score at the end of the first half was 38-26.
The Vikings came out in the third quarter and outscored Portal 26-17, that closed the lead to 5552. Portal pulled out the win in the fourth quarter, and came out on top 7768.
