Win, Lose, & Draw For VHS
The Vidalia High School Indians baseball team played three games last week. They picked up a win on Monday over Wayne County, fell on Wednesday to Swainsboro, and then tied with Statesboro on Thursday. They had a game scheduled for Friday against Statesboro, but that game was cancelled due to weather. vs. Wayne
The Vidalia Indians traveled to Jesup on Monday night, March 6, for a rematch with the Wayne County Yellow Jackets and came away with an extra inning (9) win by a score of 5-4 as Cason Banks lined a two out single in the top of the 9th inning, putting the Indians in front for the first time since the 1st inning. Veer Patel, who had come on in the bottom of the 5th inning, made the lead stand as he struck out the side in the bottom half to secure the win. Patel pitched a great last five innings to pick up the win, allowing only one base runner who reached on an error and striking out six.
The Indian offense was led by Walker Moncus with three hits, hit by a pitch twice, scoring one and driving in one. Cason Banks had two hits, scored a run, drove in one and walked twice. Carson Ricks stayed red hot picking up two hits, getting hit by a pitch, walking and scoring two runs. Lawson Lowe also had two hits and drove in a run.
The Indians jumped in front in the top of the 1st inning when Moncus doubled with one out and was driven home with a two out single by Lowe. After the Yellow Jackets were set down 1,2,3 in the bottom half, the Indians were left on top 1-0 which would be their only lead until the 9th inning.
In the 2nd inning the Indians picked up two hits but were unable to score. In the bottom half the Yellow Jackets combined four singles with an error to pick up three runs and take a 3-1 lead after two complete innings.

tom of the 3rd the Yellow Jackets were able to use a hit, a wild pitch and an error to score one more run giving them a 4-1 lead after three complete innings. That was the Yellow Jackets last threat as the Indian pitchers threw a shut out at them for the next six innings.
In the top of the 5th inning, Banks led off with a single, Moncus was hit by a pitch, and Lowe got a one out single to load the bases. However, the Indians were only able to plate one run on a wild pitch leaving the Yellow Jackets with a 4-2 lead.
The Indians struck for two more runs in the top of the 6th inning to tie the game at 4-4. Ricks was hit by a pitch and stole second. Morgan Moye followed with a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch allowed Ricks to score and Moye to move to third. Banks drew a walk, and Moncus followed with a single scoring Moye to tie the game at 4-4 after six complete innings.
Neither team could score in the 7th or 8th innings, sending the game to the 9th inning with the score still tied. In the top of the 9th inning, Ricks drew a one out walk and stole second. After a pop fly out Andrew Norfleet drew a two out walk and Banks followed with a line drive single to right, driving in Ricks and giving the Indians a 5-4 lead going to the bottom half where Patel continued his domination of the Yellow Jackets by striking out the side for the win. vs. Swainsboro
The Indians traveled to Swainsboro on Wednesday, March 8, to take on the Tigers in a rematch. The Indians had taken game one at Greg James Field by a score of 7-0. The Tigers picked up a series split by taking this rematch by a score of 12-2 in five innings. The Tigers used 12 hits to go along with six Indian errors in taking the run rule win. Walker Moncus started on the mound for the Indians going four innings to take the loss. Jackson Berry came on to pitch in the bottom of the 5th inning. Ricks, Banks, Moncus, Patel, Stewart and Whited all picked up one hit each on offense.
The Indians got two men on in the top of the 1st inning with one out but couldn't plate anything. In the bottom half the Tigers put together a couple of hits, a walk and an Indian error to take a 2-0 lead after one complete inning.
The Indians could not put together any sustained offense in the 2nd , 3rd or 4th innings. Although the Tigers did not score in the 2nd or 3rd innings, they were able to put together two more Indian errors and three hits to score four more runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a 6-0 lead after four complete.
In the top of the 5th inning Whited led off with a single followed by singles from Ricks and Banks to load the bases with no outs. Moncus followed with a two run single to cut the lead to 6-2 with two on and still no outs. That was followed with a short fly ball out to left and then a strike out, leaving two men on but now two were out. McDonald came on to pinch hit and drew a walk to load the bases again with two outs, but another strikeout ended the rally leaving the score at 6-2 with the Tigers coming up in the bottom half. The Tigers used six more hits with an error, a walk and hit batter to plate six more runs and get the 12-2 run rule win. vs. Statesboro
The Statesboro Blue Devils and the Vidalia Indians battled for 7 innings at Greg James Field on Thursday night, March 9, only to have the game end in a 1-1 tie going to the 8th inning when the rains came. It was a light rain during the 6th inning but got harder by the minute as the game progressed through the 7th inning. The Indians had a chance for a walk-off win in the bottom of the 7th inning as Dawson Stewart blasted a one out double into left center field. However, the next two batters struck out to move the game to the 8th inning. After the first Blue Devil batter struck out in the top of the 8th, it began to flood and the game had to be called as the field became too wet for safe play.
Dawson Stewart started on the mound for the Indians going the full 7 innings allowing three hits, one walk, hitting one batter and striking out seven. Veer Patel and Kaleb Bennett each had two hits to lead the offense.
The Blue Devils were not able to get a hit through the first four innings. The Indians were not able to score either until the bottom half of the 4th inning. Walker Moncus led off with a double to right center, and Bennett followed with an infield single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Patel then doubled, driving home Moncus and putting men on 2nd and 3rd with no outs seemingly setting the Indians up for a big inning. However, the two runners were stranded as the next two batters struck out and a ground ball out ended the inning but the Indians were on top 1-0 after four complete innings.
In the top half of the 5th inning the Blue Devils got their only hits of the game with three straight two out singles to tie the score at 1-1 headed to the bottom half. With the Indians unable to score in their 5th inning at bat the score remained tied at one apiece as the rain began to lightly fall. With neither team being able to score in either the 6th or 7th innings the game ended in a tie as the field became too wet.
The two teams are scheduled to play the 2nd game of their two game series in Statesboro tomorrow if the weather permits. The Indians will start their region schedule against Brantley County on Tuesday, March 14, at Greg James Field with a start time of 5:30.
