Preregistraton for Vidalia Onion Recipe Contest Is Friday, April 14
The Vidalia Onion Festival would not be complete without its traditional recipe contest and tasting, and the much-anticipated event is back again in 2023 under the guidance of Chelsea Blaxton Page and Lauren Dees.
The cooking contest is being held on Saturday, April 22, at the Vidalia Community Center at 107 Airport Road. Preregistration is required by noon on April 14, and multiple entries are encouraged. The entry fee is $15 per dish, and cooks are asked to prepare two of each dish (one will be for the judges and the other for attendees to sample). Registration forms may be found online at the Vidalia Onion Festival website (www.vidalia. org). For more information, call 537-1918.
Contest categories are Miscellaneous, Appetizer, and Side Dishes. Judges will include local dignitaries and culinary cooking experts.
Dishes will be judged on the use of the onion, taste, and presentation, in that order. Each dish will be assigned points by the judges. Prizes will be awarded in all categories to first and second place winners and a grand prize of $500 cash will go to the overall winner. Entries must arrive by 9:30 a.m. and the winners will be announced at noon. Public tasting will begin at noon. Door prizes will also be handed out to attendees during the awards presentation. The admission fee for the tasting is $5.
Last year’s grand champion was Janice Graham of Lyons with her “Cabbage/ Onion Casserole.”
