On Saturday, the Toombs County High School cross country teams traveled to Carrollton to get a preview of the GHSA State Championship course. Both groups ran well.
The girls were led by Mareli Luna, with a 25:57. Just behind her were Deanna Gonzalez and Noelia Nevarez, running 26:48 and 26:49 respectively. Rounding out the top 5 for the girls were Maritza Zamorano with a 31:25 and Josseline Zamorano with a 31: 57.
On the boys side, Juan Luna ran a strong 18:35, which was good enough for 14th overall out of 308 boys runners. Victor Valentin was 2nd for the boys with a 20:36. Moises Young was 3rd with a 21:11, followed closely by Dalton Kight in 4th with a 21:23. Augustin Cruz rounded out the top 5 for the boys with a 21:59.
Coach Jeremy Moore said, “I was pleased with how both groups ran. This is our 1st time making the trip up this early in the season to get a preview of the state course. This is the toughest course we run all year and hopefully if both teams are able to qualify for the state meet in a few months, this experience will prove valuable in being prepared to return here for the state meet.”
