The Robert Toombs Christian Academy football team traveled to Savannah this past Friday night to take on the St. Andrews Lions. The Crusaders played the role of homecoming spoiler and came back to Lyons with a 42-29 victory.
St. Andrews opened up the scoring in the first quarter on a 77-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 left in the first quarter. They added the PAT for a 7-0 lead over RTCA.
That lead didn't last long as David Hill returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. Hayden Meeks added the extra point to knot the game at 7-7.
The Crusaders' defense was stifling early on and forced a turnover that then led to a 2nd Crusader score by Justin Powell from 19 yards out. That was set up by another big run by Hill. Meeks added the extra point for a 14-7 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half.
The Crusaders shut down St. Andrews' next possession and quickly added a 3rd touchdown on a rush by Hill for nearly 40 yards. With the extra point it was a 21-7 lead.
The Lions were able to get back on the scoreboard on their next possession to make it a 21-14 game. St. Andrews then kicked and recovered an onside kick to march down the field for a last second field goal attempt as time expired before half-time. They missed the field goal, though, as RTCA led 21-14 at halftime.
The Crusaders' defense stymied the Lions offense to start the 2nd half and forced a punt. It was a great punt that pinned the Crusaders at their own ½ yard line. The Crusader offense then marched 99 yards down the field to score their fourth touchdown of the evening on a 2-yard Ahmelion Jones run to extend the lead to 28-14 after the successful PAT.
It didn't take long and St. Andrews was back on the board as they hit a long touchdown pass for 75 yards that brought the game to 28-21.
There were penalties after the touchdown against the Lions that pushed them back on the kickoff. They elected to try an onside kick anyway, with RTCA recovering it with great field position at the Lions 35yard line.
RTCA then scored just a few plays later off on a David HIll 26-yard rush and a Hayden Meeks extra point to make it another two score lead, 3521.
The Lions found a way into the endzone on a 6-yard QB keeper to cut back into the lead, also adding on a two-point conversion making it a 35-29 game.
RTCA scored on their ensuing possession on an Jones 19-yard run and a Meeks extra point to complete the scoring for the evening. The Crusaders forced a punt on the Lions' next possession and the Crusader offense was able to kill the clock and take home a 42-29 victory.
Defensively, the Crusaders were led by Hill, Jones, Landen Sauls, Gage Brantley, and Isaac Holton; and Senior running back David Hill was named player of the game.
The Crusaders will head to St. Simons this Thursday night to take on Frederica Academy at 7:00 p.m.
