Treutlen Defeats Wheeler
The Treutlen County High School Vikings football team welcomed the Wheeler County High School Bulldogs to Soperton on Friday of last week for the rivalry game. It was a defensive battle with a total of just 15 points scored in the contest, with the Vikings taking the win. It is the first time since 2015 that Treutlen has beaten both rivals, Wheeler and Montgomery, in the same season. This was also win number 100 for Treutllen Head Coach Pat Collins.
It did not take long for Treutlen to get on the board. With 8:58 left in the first quarter the Vikings took the early lead when Peyton Miller took it in from 15 yards out. Treutlen went for the two-point conversion, which proved to be pivital, and Angelo Peeples broke the plane to put Treutlen on top 8-0.
Near the end of the first quarter of the contest the Bulldogs scored as quarterback Rhett Rodgers found Jeremiah Kincy on a 31-yard touchdown pass. Wheeler lined up for the two-point try to tie the game, but a penalty moved them back. They then decided to take the extra point, which was good from Juan Juarez, making the score 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.
What was not expected was that those would be the only two touchdowns of the entire game.
Neither team could get much going on offense throughout the rest of the game. The only real chance came in the third quarter from the Bulldogs as they tried a 33-yard field goal. The kick had the distance, but went wide right to keep Treutlen on top, 8- 7.
Treutlen held on to take the win by that score. It is just the second win of the season for the Vikings, who are now 2-7 on the year and they are now 1-3 in Region play. Treutlen will wrap up their regular season on the road in McRae this Friday night against the 7-1 Trojans of Telfiar County with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs are 3-6 on the year and 0-4 in Region play. They will play their final regular season this Friday at home against the Patriots of Wilcox County with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
