This year, Wheeler County Middle School established a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) club for students who are in the gifted program. Students meet once a week to foster their creativity in multiple subject areas.

Given the ability to plan their own course of learning, gifted students in grades 6-8 worked together to choose the first project that they would like to work on. The winning idea was to write a drama based on a real, historical event.

Students are already hard at work researching the event and planning the plot of the drama. Several students were asked how they feel about participating in the GATE projects. Seventh grader, Kinslee Fowler, stated, “I like doing the projects because you get to be hands-on. That really helps me learn.” Gabby Sellers, a seventh grader, responded, “It gives me a whole different perspective when I have control of my own learning.”

Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Stanley are the sponsors for the English Language Arts/ Social Studies GATE Club. They say they are very excited about this program and watching the students grow into passionate learners.
