TCHS Basketball Opens Season

The Toombs County High School Bulldogs basketball team has gotten their season underway. They took on the Yellow Jackets of Jeff Davis on the road last Tuesday and then took part in the Hwy. 280 Tip-Off Tournament at Vidalia High School on Saturday.

Girls vs. JD

The TCHS Lady Bulldogs rolled to an opening win over JD last week. They started off with a 6-3 lead and pushed that to 14-3 in the second quarter of the game. They pulled away in the third quarter of the game to a 23-8 lead and were up 31-13 early in the fourth.

Toombs went on to win the game 43-22 over the Yellow Jackets to get their first win of the season.

Boys vs. JD

The boys also got a win over Jeff Davis in their first game of the season. The Bulldogs were up by just three at the end of the first quarter, 17-14, and in the second JD closed that lead to two points. Toombs was on top 28-26 at the end of the first half of action.

In the third quarter the Bulldogs began to pull away and led 46-39 at the end of the quarter. Toombs broke it open in the fourth and took the win, 68-52.

TCHS was led by Dominic Eason with 21 points, Marion James and Parker Stanley each added 13 points, and Demetrius Cutler scored 11 in the win.

Girls vs. Screven

The Lady Bulldogs faced off with the Lady Gamecocks of Screven County on Saturday at VHS in the 280 Tip-Off Tournament. It was a tough first quarter for TCHS as they fell behind 12-5. Screven kept up the pressure in the second to take a 23-14 lead going to halftime.

In the third Toombs kept pace, but trailed 4028 going to the fourth. Screven extended their lead in the final period and took the win, 64-31.

Boys vs. Veterans

The boys had the task of taking on 6A Veterans on Saturday in the Tip-Off Tournament. Toombs played them well and it went down to the wire, with the Warhawks of Veterans winning by just three points.

Toombs had the early lead and were on top 1613 at the end of the first period. Toombs maintained that lead in the second and took a 30-27 lead into halftime of the game.

In the third period Veterans took the lead and were up 49-45 heading to the fourth quarter. Toombs outscored Veterans in the fourth, but by just one point, as they closed in on the lead, but could not overtake the Warhawks. Veterans took the win, 68-65, over Toombs.

Eason again led TCHS, this time with 22 points. Jesus Quintero added 21 points, and James and Stanley each scored 10 points in the loss.

Toombs was back at VHS for the final day of the tournament on Tuesday of this week with both the boys and girls facing off with West Laurens after presstime. Toombs will host Bacon County on Saturday of this week with the girls starting at 1:00 p.m. and the boys to follow.
