The Brewton-Parker College men's wrestling team faced off with Life University on Wednesday of last week and then took part in the Midway Duals in Kentucky over the weekend.
At Life
Brewton-Parker College Men’s Wrestling faced No. 2-ranked Life (Ga.) on Wednesday night in Marietta, Ga.
The (RV) Barons (1-1, 1-1 AAC) continued con ference action, dropping the match against the Running Eagles (4-0, 3-0 AAC) 45-9.
BPC started the dual off strong, as Patrick Jones gathered four team points for the Barons with a 13-1 major decision in the opening bout.
At 133, Keyshaun Taylor was dropped in a 15-0 tech fall by Ethan Sellers to give the Running Eagles a 5-4 lead. Conner Wright followed Taylor at 141, falling in a 16-0 tech fall to Bret Minor.
For the 149-pound weight class, Gavin Daniels dropped his match to Cole Homet by a pin in 2:04. Robert Keyhea also took a loss by fall (0:35) to Alexander Couto. With the Barons being down 22-4 halfway through the dual, Sean Houston found success against Peyton Brooks at 165. Houston won the match with a 17-2 tech fall to cut the Running Eagles’ lead to 22-10.
Jesus Grijalva fell in 1:13 to Tre Morrisette at 174, followed by Charlie Henkel taking a 17-2 tech fall to No. 10-ranked Myles Starke. At 184, Jomar Sanchez had to take an unfortunate medical forfeit in his match against Michael Gibson.
For the 285-pound weight class, Tevin Per- son was downed in a 0:21 fall from Cohle Feliciano to end the dual 45-9 in favor of the Running Eagles.
At Midway Duals
Brewton-Parker Men’s Wrestling hit the road this weekend for a trio of competitions at the Midway Duals in Midway, Ky. The Barons (2-3) finished the week end road trip with a 1-2 record on Saturday afternoon, securing a win over NCAA Division II Kentucky Wesleyan. BPC recorded losses to NCAA DII Thomas More (Ky.) as well as the hosts and fellow NAIA member, (RV) Midway (Ky.).
Midway 31, BPC 14
The afternoon began with a dual against the Eagles of Midway. Patrick Jones and the Barons took an early five-point lead in the 125-lb bout.
Jones performed well in producing a 20-4 tech fall over Andrew Vogeler.
Midway responded with a strong four-bout swing which resulted in 20 team points, taking a 20-5 lead. In the 133-lb match, Tyrique Simms pinned Keyshaun Taylor in a span of 4:13 for the first six points of the dual.
At 141, Conner Wright fell by a 13-4 major decision to Nolan Jones, giving away four team points. Kaleb Clark at 149 took down Bradley Owens in a 15-1 major decision to give Midway another four points. The Eagles closed out the 20-point swing with a pin from Brent Hudgins over Robert Keyhea at 157.
Brewton-Parker added to its tally in the following two matches with Sean Houston secur -ing a 9-3 decision over Jabril Williams at 165 and Justin Grant mirroring the 9-3 decision over Daylon Stafford at 174.
BPC managed to cut the Midway lead down to 2011.
In a tough bout to the end, Charlie Henkel fell by a pin as time expired in the match, falling to Michael Colligan in the 184lb bout. With a 26-11 lead, Midway secured the final points to their tally in the 197-lb bout as Thomas Crawford was defeated by David Emfinger in a 16-1 tech fall.
The heavyweight match was a highlight as No. 17-ranked Wilkinson Saul downed No.
15-ranked Byron Pierce in a 6-2 decision to finish the dual in a 31-14 defeat to Midway.
Thomas More 34, BPC 20 Brewton-Parker opened the second dual with an early 12-point advantage as Thomas More gave up forfeits at 125 and 133. However, the Saints were able to make up the lost points, earning three straight pins over the Barons by taking down Wright (141), Ow –
ens (149), and Keyhea (157) for an 18-point shift in the score. In the 165-lb bout, Houston continued to shine for the Barons by producing a 20-5 tech fall over Ryan Draughn to give BPC five time points.
Grant followed up in the 174-lb bout and recorded a 12-5 decision to boost Brewton-Parker back into control of the score with a 20-18 lead.
Zavier Campsey would stop the Barons’ momentum with a pin over Henkel at 184 before the Saints followed up with a 14-4 major decision over Crawford at 197 and a quick pin over Levi Shaw at 285 to close out the dual with a 34-20 win over BPC.
BPC 42, Kentucky Wesleyan 14 The Barons ended the day on a high note with a convincing win over Kentucky Wesleyan.
Jones earned a pin (2:28) over Bryson Rowley to give BPC an early 6-0 lead. Gabriel Evans received a forfeit win at 133 before the Panthers were able to place points on the board.
Matthew Velasco took down Taylor at 141 with a 20-2 tech fall, but the Barons were gifted another six points by a forfeit at 149. Unfortu- nately, Owens was pinned by Cade Johnson at 157 to give six points to Kentucky Wesleyan.
Houston was a con stant bright spot in the lineup, finishing the day with an unblemished 3-0 record by capping the day off with a swift pin in the blink of an eye, knocking off Jeremiah Matthews in nine seconds. Grant continued with his stellar performance, producing a pin in 1:13 to remain un beaten for the day by downing Shevan Griffith.
Henkel received a forfeit win at 184 before the Panthers recorded a 10-1 major over Crawford. At 285, Saul was able to slam the door shut on Kentucky Wesleyan with a pin over Robert Ward to secure a 42-14 victory.
Brewton-Parker will compete in one final dual before the new year, taking on AAC foe South- eastern (Fla.) in Lake – land, Fla. on Wednesday of this week.
