An early morning motorcycle accident claimed the life of a Lyons man on Friday, February 23.
The Toombs County 911 dispatch received a call regarding a crash involving several motorcycles near the intersection of Old River Road and P.A. Grace Road at approximately 2:23 a.m. on Friday. Upon arrival on scene, deputies found three motorcycles — driven by Douglas Hart, of Woodstock; Wendell NeeSmith, of Lyons; and Tony Ogletree, of Uvalda — wrecked on the roadway.
Based on preliminary information, deputies believe the men were traveling east on Old River Road near the intersection when a deer crossed the roadway, striking the first motorcycle, which was driven by Hart. The second motorcycle, which was driven by NeeSmith, then collided with Hart’s motorcyle, causing minor injuries to Hart’s left hand, but lifethreatening injuries to Nee-Smith. Ogletree, who was driving a third motorcycle in the group, was able to avoid the collision and did not receive any injuries.
NeeSmith was transported to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Toombs County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement on the crash, which read, “We ask that you keep the NeeSmith family in your prayers during this difficult time.”
The wreck investigation has been turned over to the Georgia State Patrol Post 18 (Reidsville) for further investigation.
