Qualifying for Local Elections to Begin Monday
Qualifying for the Qualifying for the May 21 General Primary/Nonpartisan Election will be held March 4-8 in Wheeler, Montgomery, and Toombs Counties, as several local office seats are up for grabs.
Qualifying will open at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 4, and will continue daily during the Board of Elections’ office hours until 12 p.m. on Friday, March 8. Qualifying fees for seeking election to local offices are determined by calculating 3% of each office’s base salary or based on what the county paid the officials in 2023. Offices up for election and qualifying fees follow.
Wheeler County
Wheeler County Commission: District 1 seat, currently held by Rochelle Culver; District 2 seat, currently held by Danny Clark; and District 3 seat, currently held by Keith McNeal. Terms are for four years and the qualifying fee for these offices is $192.
Wheeler County Board of Education: District 3 seat, currently held by Bill Ford; and District 4 seat currently held by Tucker Dixon. There are six district seats on the Board of Education and one at-large post. Elections for these posts are rotated every two years. Terms for these nonpartisan posts are for six years and the qualifying fee is $42.
Wheeler County Sheriff: a post currently held by Randy Rigdon. The term for this constitutional office is for four years, and the qualifying fee is $1,678.58.
Wheeler County Coroner: a nonpartisan post currently held by Ted Mercer. This term is for four years and the qualifying fee is $387.16.
Wheeler County Tax Commissioner: a post currently held by Kim Clark. The term for this position is four years and the qualifying fee is $1,465.70.
Wheeler County Pro bate Judge/Magistrate: a nonpartisan post currently held by Jolinda Harrelson. The term for this post is four years and the qualifying fee is $1,465.00.
Wheeler County Su perior Court Clerk: a post currently held by Carol Bragg. The term for this seat is four years, and the qualifying fee is $1,465.70.
Montgomery County
Montgomery Coun ty Commission: District 1 seat, currently held by Chad Kenney; District 2 seat, currently held by Tim Williamson; District 3 seat, held by Ginger Byrd Morris. Terms are four years and the qualifying fee is $108.
Montgomery County Board of Education: District 1 seat, currently held by Henry Price; District 2 seat, currently held by Susan Beard; District 3 seat, currently held by Fernando Rodriguez; District 4 seat, currently held by Eugene “Pete” Ward. Seats are nonpartisan with four year terms, and the qualifying fee is $72.
Montgomery County Sheriff: a post currently held by Doug Maybin. The term for this constitutional office is for four years, and the qualifying fee is $1,678.
Montgomery County Coroner: a post currently held by Laurie Holland. This term is for four years and the qualifying fee is $36.
Montgomery County Tax Commissioner: a post currently held by Loretta Lane. The term for this position is four years and the qualifying fee is $1,465.
Montgomery County Probate Judge: a post currently held by Rubie Nell Sanders. The term for this constitutional office is for four years, and the qualifying fee is $1,465.
Montgomery County Superior Court Clerk: a post currently held by Tammy Foskey. The term for this seat is four years, and the qualifying fee is $1,465.
District Supervisor of Soil and Water Conservation: a post currently held by Samuel Baker. The term is four years, and the position is nonpaid; thus, there is no qualifying fee. To qualify, a petition with 25 signatures of registered voters is required.
Toombs County
Toombs County Commission Chairman: a post currently held by David Sikes. The term for this constitutional office is for four years, and the qualifying fee is $540.
Toombs County Commission: District 2 seat, currently held by Wendell Dixon; District 3 seat, currently held by Darriel Nobles. Terms are four years and the qualifying fee is $180.
Toombs County Board of Education: District 2 seat, currently held by Trent Akins; District 4 seat, currently held by Michael Grimes; District 6 seat, currently held by Josh Dixon. Seats are nonpartisan with four-year terms, and the qualifying fee is $72.
Toombs County Sheriff: a post currently held by Alvie “Junior” Kight. The term for this constitutional office is for four years, and the qualifying fee is $2,123.
Toombs County Cor oner: a post currently held by Ronald V. Hall. This term is for four years and the qualifying fee is $108.
Toombs County Tax Commissioner: a post currently held by Brenda Williams. The term for this position is four years and the qualifying fee is $1,779.
Toombs County Pro bate Judge: a post currently held by Tina Lindsey. The term for this constitutional office is for four years, and the qualifying fee is $1,465.
Toombs County Su perior Court Clerk: a post currently held by Nancy Pittman. The term for this seat is four years, and the qualifying fee is $1,779.
To qualify for any of the listed offices, individuals should visit their local county Board of Elections office.
In addition to these offices, three State Court Judge positions are available for Montgomery County, and a State Court Judge position and State Court Solicitor position are available in Toombs County. Qualifying for these positions will be held within the Georgia Secretary of State’s office.
