In a dazzling display of literary enthusiasm, Read Across America Week reached its grand finale with a vibrant Book Character Parade by the staff and students of J.D. Dickerson Primary School. The event took place at Vidalia High School on Buck Cravey Field. The event was a resounding success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the school's staff, parents, community members, and the high school volunteers (VHS) and Vidalia City Schools (VCS) bus drivers who played pivotal roles in making it a memorable experience for the young participants.

The parade, a creative culmination of a week dedicated to celebrating the joy of reading, saw an array of children and teachers proudly showcasing their favorite book characters.

The event's success was attributed to the collective spirit and collaborative efforts of all involved, including high school participants (VHS Percussion team; Coach Missy Owens, Announcer; VHS Game Day Cheerleaders, State Champs; Tomahawks Dance Team; and VHS Wrestling State Champs Deuce Hightower and Jack Godbee; as well as Vidalia City School bus drivers. Everyone went above and beyond to ensure the safety and smooth flow of the parade, providing logistical support that was crucial to its success. It is also noted that many of the VCS central office staff were in attendance.

The parade was led by the school's dedicated staff, who not only organized the event but also actively participated, embodying their commitment to fostering a love for reading among the students. Parents and community members filled the stands cheering and applauding the participants, showcasing the strong sense of community that thrives in the area.

This year’s Parade Marshal consisted of VHS Game Day Cheerleaders (State Champs), and VHS Wrestling State Champs: Deuce Hightower and Jack Godbee.

'We are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed to making the Book Character Parade a special event for our Little Indians,' expressed Charleen Norfleet, Principal, and echoed by Beth Wiggins, Assistant Principal. 'The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the participants truly highlighted the magic of storytelling and the power of community collaboration. We are particularly grateful for Mr. Bruce Mulkey for allowing J.D. Dickerson Primary to use the Buck Cravey Field at VHS.”
