Wheeler Sweeps Treutlen
The Bulldogs of Wheeler County High School swept a threegame series over the Vikings of Treutlen County High School last week. That moved the Bulldogs to 8-1 on the year and dropped the Vikings to 5- 4.
Game 1
On Tuesday Walker Bridges got the win on the mound for the Bulldogs as he struck out 11 batters on the way to a 7-4 win.
The Bulldogs had the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, and Shane Selph walked to bring in the first run of the game. Wheeler couldn't do any more in the inning.
Treutlen tied the game in the third inning on a hit by Acie Dickens. In the top of the fourth, Kolt Bell drove in a run for Wheeler as did Bridges to put the Bulldogs up 3-1. Treutlen answered with two more in the bottom of the frame to tie it back up at 3-3.
Wheeler plated a run in the top of the sixth, but the Vikings sent the game to extra innings in the seventh with a run to tie the game at 4-4, off a hit by Jack Walker.
Neither team scored in the eighth inning, but in the top of the ninth after Kyler Stinson walked in a run, Selph hit an RBI single, and then Bell walked to bring in the third run of the inning to put Wheeler on top, 7-4.
Wheeler held in the bottom of the ninth to take the win, 7-4.
Game 2
Wheeler County rolled over the Vikings in the second game of the series on Thursday. Wheeler got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with two runs. Treutlen picked up a run in the top of the third inning to close the lead to 2-1, but Wheeler blew the game open in the bottom of the frame with eight more runs. Rhett Rodgers singled in a run, Danyon Hayes drew a walk that scored a run,Kyler Stinson also walked in a run, and then Ian Scott drove in three runs before a double by Drew Dixon added two more. That put the Bulldogs on top 10-1.
Treutlen plated two in the top of the fourth inning, but three more in the fifth by Wheeler gave them a 13-3, run rule win.
Game 3
The final game of the series was again all Wheeler. The Bulldogs jumped out to a big lead in the top of the first inning with seven runs. An error brought in the first run, and then a triple by Hayes plated three more. Wheeler loaded the bases back up and a walk by Stinson made it 5-0. Scott had an RBI single and another error on Treutlen made it 7-0.
The Vikings scored a run in the bottom of the first, and then added another in the second to close the lead to 7-2. But in the top of the third, Wheeler plated a run on a hit by Scott to make it 8-2. Wheeler added a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to push their lead to 11-2.
The Vikings got another run across in the fifth inning, but six more from Wheeler in the top of the sixth gave them a 17-3 win by the run rule.
This week Wheeler takes on Hawkinsville in a Region series. They played the first game on Tuesday after presstime. They will be at Hawkinsville on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and then in Alamo on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
The Vikings take on Telfair County in a Region series this week. They played the first game after presstime on Tuesday. They will play on Thursday at Telfair at 6:00 p.m. and then on Friday in Soperton at 6:00 p.m.
