Lady Barons Pick Up 3 Wins

The Lady Barons softball team of Brewton-Parker College took on Columbia College and Middle Georgia last week on the diamond. BPC took two games from Columbia and then split with Middle Georgia. vs. Columbia
Brewton-Parker Softball traveled to Columbia, South Carolina on Wednesday afternoon for a road matchup against Columbia College (S.C.). The Lady Barons (11-7) defeated the Koalas (12-10) in a 4-2 win in game one followed by a 9-2 victory in the second game for the 4-0 season sweep over Columbia.
Game 1
After a scoreless two innings, Brewton-Parker took care of four hits and an error to push four runs home. Ashley Wilson singled from the leadoff position and stole second before Alexis Bradshaw reached first on an error and stole a base as well.
Destiny Lucas produced a two-RBI single to center field to give the BPC a 2-0 advantage followed by a sacrifice fly from Alyssa Usrey and an RBI double from Chloe Strickland for a 4-0 lead, leaving a runner on base to close out the inning.
Both teams struggled to find scores for most of the game until the bottom of the seventh when the Koalas scored two runs with a single and a double to cut the deficit in half. Fortunately, the Lady Barons were able to hold off for the 4-2 win.
Brewton-Parker led 6-3 in hits with Strickland leading the way with two hits and an RBI. Lucas led with two RBI while notching a hit and a run. A total of four Lady Barons stole a base each. Natalie O’Neal (6-4) pitched for four innings and struck out four batters in nohit ball while Maeleigh Burns pitched the final three innings, allowing two earned runs, three hits and striking out a batter.
Game 2
Brewton-Parker blew the second game open in the first inning with five runs on five hits and a pair of Columbia errors for a 5-0 lead. After a leadoff single from Bradshaw, Lucas reached on an error to push Bradshaw home for the first run. Lucas then scored on another error for a 2-0 lead.
Usrey barreled a homer to left field to move the Lady Barons to a 3-0 lead before Hailey Gabrich doubled and BryAnn Pound notched a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 advantage. Strickland brought home one final run in the inning with an RBI single for a five-run lead.
Columbia eventually placed a run on the scoreboard, taking advantage of two errors and a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Brewton-Parker scored with two hits and an error in the top of the fourth inning for a 6-1 lead.
Both teams scored in the sixth inning as Tori Wright produced an RBI single for the Lady Barons while the Koalas scored on a fielder’s choice for a 7-2 ball game. Brewton-Parker added two more runs to the tally with a pair of scores coming home on an error to move to a 9-2 game lead in the top of the seventh inning.
BPC led 11-7 hits with Bradshaw producing a game-leading three hits and three runs. Wright led the game with two RBI as well. As for the base runners, Bradshaw led with three stolen bastes followed by Lucas and Wright with one each. Kira Altman (5-3) earned the win with five innings pitched, allowing five hits and one run while walking one batter and striking out another. Burns pitched the final two innings, giving away two hits and one run while striking out two batters. vs. Middle Georgia
Brewton-Parker Softball took on No. 17 Middle Georgia State on Thursday afternoon. Brewton-Parker (12-8, 4-4 SSAC) went 1-1 on the day with the Knights (15-7, 5-3 SSAC). The Lady Barons picked up game one 2-1 but dropped game two 6-4.
Game 1
After starting the game with three scoreless innings, BPC struck first in the fourth inning. A single from Taylor Elliott got the Lady Barons on base. Rylie Lumley, who came in to run for Elliott, stole second, before being brought in from a single from Cailyn Snellgrove to take a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Wilson got on third after a single and advancing on two groundouts. Wilson was brought in with a single from Tori Wright to increase the Lady Barons’ advantage to two runs.
The Knights brought the game back within one in the top of the sixth. Middle Georgia picked up three hits and scored one run, but it was not enough. The Lady Barons held off the Knights to take a 2-1 victory in game one.
Both teams finished tied with seven hits apiece. Wilson led with a hit and a run, while six other Lady Barons gathered hits. Lumley also gathered the second run of the game. Natalie O’Neal (8-4) pitched all seven innings, and gave up two walks, seven hits, and one run.
Game 2
Brewton-Parker started the game hot with singles from Destiny Lucas and Wright. A wild pitch got BPC into scoring position before a single from Alyssa Usrey scored Lucas, and a sacrifice fly from Elliott brought home Wright.
Hailey Gabrich picked up a triple to right center to bring home Usrey, giving the Lady Barons a 3-0 lead. In the top of the second, the Knights picked up a pair of hits and scored two runs, making it a 3-2 ball game.
BPC extended their lead with a pair of hits from Wilson and Alexis Bradshaw. A ground out from Lucas put them into a threatening position as Wright hit a sacrifice fly to bring Wilson home for the 4-2 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Middle Georgia took a 5-4 lead with three runs off of three hits. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Knights extended their lead to 6-4 with another hit. The Lady Barons were unable to catch back up, and dropped the game 6-4 to finish the day.
Brewton-Parker tied in hits with Middle Georgia at 8-8. Wilson lead with two hits and one run, while Wright, Usrey, and Lucas all had one hit and one run. Bradshaw and Gabrich also picked up hits. Kira Altman (4-4) pitched six innings and gave up two walks seven hits and six runs while O’Neal pitched one inning.
