Wheeler Sweeps Telfair
The Wheeler County High School Bulldog baseball team continues their great season as they swept Telfiar County in a three-game Region series last week to improve their overall record to 17-1, and 11-0 in Region action.
Game 1
Walker Bridges was in control on the mound for Wheeler as he threw a twohitter with 11 strikeouts against Telfair in the first game of the series.
Wheeler took the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Bridges drove in the first run of the game. Rhett Rodgers drove in two runs for a 3-0 lead, and was followed by Danyon Hayes with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
Wheeler pushed the lead to 5-0 with an RBI double by Layton Horne in the third inning to make it 5-0. Wheeler added one run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings on the way to an 8-0 win over Telfair.
Game 2
In the second game of the series, Wheeler wasted no time as they plated three runs in the top of the first inning. They came on RBI's by Drew Dixon and Horne. Telfair scored a run in the bottom of the first to make the score 3-1.
Wheeler added four more runs in the second inning. Ian Scott singled in a run, an error scored another, and then hits by Rodgers and Dixon pushed the lead to 7-1. Wheeler scored four more in the third inning, and one in the fourth and one in the fifth as they took the win, 13-1.
Game 3
This was the only close game of the week for the Bulldogs as they took the win by just one run in extra innings.
Wheeler scored a run in the top of the second inning on a double by Kyler Stinson, but Telfair answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead over the Bulldogs.
Neither team scored again until the top of the sixth inning when the Bulldogs added a run to close the lead to 3-2. Wheeler tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with a run on a hit by Hayes.
That pushed the game to the eighth inning, and Wheeler came through with a run in the top of the inning to take a 4-3 lead over Telfair. Wheeler held in the bottom of the frame to take the win, 4-3 and sweep the series.
This week Wheeler will play a couple of nonregion games as they play Clinch County at 4:00 p.m. at home on Wednesday and travel to Johnson County at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
