Dr. Danielle Sharpe receives Georgia Tech 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award
The Distinguished Alumni Awards honor graduates from each of the six academic schools in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, GA. On April 10, 2024, Dr. Danielle Sharpe received the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award from Georgia Tech’s School of History and Sociology.
Dr. Sharpe is a 2014 Georgia Tech graduate and is currently an epidemiologist and Epidemic Intelligence Service officer at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, where she supports sub-Saharan African countries affected by the global HIV epidemic. She also responds to domestic and international epidemics, including COVID- 19 and mpox.
Previously, Dr. Sharpe was the lead of CDC's Social Vulnerability Index project, where she developed health equity metrics to guide equitable distribution of public health resources to U.S. communities disproportionately affected by social inequities during epidemics and other public health emergencies.
She earned her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Emory University, a Master's degree in Epidemiology from the University of Florida, and a Bachelor's degree in History, Technology, and Society from Georgia Tech.
Dr. Sharpe is a 2011 Ware County High School graduate, the daughter of Everett and Jewell Sharpe of Waycross, and the granddaughter of Lucille Jones of Lyons, Jimmy Lee Sharpe of Reidsville, and Joyce Skipper of Baxley.
