Toombs & Vidalia On The Diamond
The Toombs County High School Bulldogs and the Vidalia High School Indians baseball teams met last week for a huge three-game Region series. Vidalia took the first game, with Toombs bouncing back for a win in the second. In the third game it came down to late inning heroics from Toombs to take the win, and the series.
The Bulldogs are now 16-9 on the year and are 10-5 in Region play as they are in 2nd place. The Indians are 11-16 on the season and they are 6-8 in Region play and currently sit in 5th place.
Game 1
The Indians took the lead in the top of the first inning in Lyons on Tuesday of last week. Brayden McCaw singled in a run to give VHS the early lead. In the top of the second inning the Indians pushed their lead to 2-0 after an RBI single by Ty Beck.
VHS plated three more runs in the third inning. Veer Patel drove in a run, and then Andrew Norfleet knocked in two runs with a big single, as VHS was on top 5-0.
The only run of the game for the Bulldogs came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jackson Jenkins drove in a run to make the score 5-1.
Patel got the win for VHS as he threw all seven innings, allowing just five hits while striking out six. Treyvonne Harris took the loss for the Bulldogs, going seven innings allowing eight hits, but he also struck out eight batters.
Game 2
In the second game of the series on Wednesday in Lyons, Toombs bounced back and took a commanding win over VHS.
Right from the onset, the Bulldogs’ bats were alive with energy. Cameron Ledford and Tucker Braddy kicked off the scoring, each driving in runs in the first inning. The offensive surge continued into the second inning as Brantley Upshaw and Ledford connected for singles, each adding a run to the lead. Jesus Quintero drove in two more runs with an RBI double. VHS was on top 6-0 after just two innings.
The Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off of hits by Lawson Lowe and McCaw, but that only closed the lead to 6-2.
Toombs scored on run in the fifth inning and one in the sixth for an 8-2 lead. They plated two more in the seventh as they pushed the lead to 10-2. VHS scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a hit by Mason Toole, but that was all they could mus- continued from page
ter as they dropped the game to Toombs, 10-3.
TJ Stanley got the win for Toombs as he gave up just three hits, while striking out seven. Jackson Berry took the loss for the Indians but he did strike out eight batters.
Game 3
VHS appeared to have this game under control until the Bulldogs exploded for five runs in the fourth inning, and then took the lead in the sixth.
VHS scored two runs in the top of the first inning off a two-run single by McCaw. VHS added to that lead in the fourth inning with three more runs to take a 5-0 lead over the Bulldogs.
Toombs came storming back in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Toombs loaded the bases and a hit-by-pitch, and error and a single by Brantey Upshaw. That sent the game to the fifth.
Neither team scored in the fifth inning, but in the bottom of the sixth inning Toombs took their first lead of the game from a solo home. Harris stepped up and put Toombs on top with a shot to left field. Toombs held in the seventh to take the win, 6-5.
Ryder Sears got the win for Toombs on the mound in relief. Carson Ricks took the loss for the Indians, This week Toombs played a nonregion game on Tuesday after presstime against Metter on the road. VHS made up their final Region game on Monday against Brantley County after presstime. Those game will wrap up the Regular season.
