Montgomery County High School announced the Valedictorian and Salutatorian earlier this year, as Rebecca Hong and Dev Patel earned the honors.
Hong was named the school’s valedictorian after remaining in the top spot of her class every year since she began school. She is the daughter of Sampyo Hong and Deokhyo Kim, and has received numerous awards throughout her high school career, including: Highest GPA of Grade (all four years), “A” Honor Roll (all four years) Distinguished Learner for Georgia Milestones (three years), Top Scoring Team Member of Math Team for RESA contest (junior year), Academic Excellence for Science (sophomore year), Academic Excellence for English (junior year), and the STAR Student Award (senior year). She has been active in the school’s Beta Club, Student Council, the Greater Vidalia Youth Leadership Program, and the Medical Staff Youth Advisory Board.
“I feel incredibly blessed and grateful to receive this honor. I have long dreamed of and strived for this accomplishment since freshman year; as a result, it almost feels surreal,” Hong emphasized. “I would like to thank God first and foremost and then my family, friends, teachers, and lastly classmates for their kind and unwavering support. Without those mentioned, I would never have reached my goals or become the person I am today.”
When asked if she had any advice to underclassmen, she said, “Know that the sky’s the limit, so do not ever settle for anything less. Take advantage of every opportunity and use it to the best. Do not let your background, family, abilities, or even your location dictate what you do and strive for. Dream big, and most of all, trust God because He is the source of wisdom and knowledge.”
Dev Patel is the school’s Salutatorian, with only fractions of a point separating the two top grade point averages. Patel, son of Nima and Kenny Patel, has attended Montgomery County Schools since kindergarten, and has been highly active in school activities, participating on the soccer team for four years, cross country team for two years, and being a member of the school’s Beta Club and Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters for four years. Throughout his time in high school, Patel has earned several honors, including Perfect Attendance and A+ Honor Roll all four years of high school, and succeeding as an Honors and Dual Enrollment student.
He commented on the honor, sharing, “Accomplishing this goal has been an honor and I feel amazed at myself for pushing through and always doing as much as I can to succeed. I would like to thank my parents and teachers for pushing me and helping me to accomplish this goal.” Patel also encouraged underclassmen to always work hard, as they will see progress from this effort.
The Montgomery County High School Class of 2024 will graduate at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at Brogdon Field.

She has participated in Beta Club, National Honor Society, Spirit Cheerleading, Competition Cheerleading, tennis, and track. Overall, receiving the salutatorian title has been an unforgettable experience that inspires me to keep challenging myself and changing the world for the better.”

First and foremost, I want to sincerely thank my instructors and mentors for their crucial advice and support, which have helped me shape the course of my education. Their commitment to education has inspired me to set high standards for myself and pursue my objectives firmly. I am also grateful for my family’s everlasting support, love, and sacrifices to make sure I succeed. Throughout my education, their confidence in me has served as a dependable source of support. Additionally, I am thankful to my friends and classmates for their support and collaboration. We have an abundance of experiences and memories together that have enriched my time in high school.”
When asked if he had any advice for underclassmen, Williams commented, “As Salutatorian, I would urge underclassmen to seize every chance they encounter. Engage in demanding classes and explore extracurricular activies that inspire you. Whenever assistance is required, don’t hesitate to seek it out. Remember, achievement isn’t solely measured by grades; it also encompasses individual development and perseverance. Maintain your concentration, nurture your curiosity, and maintain unwavering self-confidence. Your path is uniquely yours. Make it count.”
