Brewton-Parker College Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Steve Edwards, has been announced as The Leadership Playbook 2023-24 Head Coach of the Year. This honor is one that recognizes coaches who maximize success, value growth, and make a positive impact on those they are called to lead.

“It is always great to be recognized,” Edwards said. “I appreciate Jamy Bechler and everyone that had a hand in choosing me for this award.”

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity I have to work with such a great group of coaches and young women,” Edwards added. “My staff is top tier and I love coaching the young women in our program. We are one big family, and this award is a reflection of our program as a whole.”

TheLeadershipPlaybook. com helps athletic departments and sports teams build stronger cultures by developing better teammates and more positive leaders. Jamy Bechler developed the program as a former basketball coach and high school athletic director. Bechler is now a professional speaker, team performance consultant, author, and host of the Success is a Choice Podcast.

“We’re thrilled to recognize Coach Edwards as an example of what a coach should be,” said Bechler. “He’s impacted so many student-athletes through the years and is extremely well-respected in the profession. His leadership, influence, experience, and character have, no doubt, played a huge part in Brewton- Parker’s success.”

Edwards is coming off back-to-back appearances in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Championship First Round while building a 4121 record the last two seasons. The Lady Barons have also produced five All-SSAC selections in the last two seasons and have been led to four-straight SSAC Tournament Semifinal appearances. Edwards has been at the helm of the program since the 2016 season and has totaled a 116-105 record as the head coach.

“I was excited to see Steve receive this recognition,” said Vice President of Athletics, Chris Dooley. “He is a coach that does things the right way. The foundation of his program is built on the relationships that he develops with his athletes, coaching staff, and his peers. His athletes know that he cares about them as people first and athletes second. This relationship allows him to coach his athletes at a higher level and get 110% out of them. I’m grateful for how Steve leads his program and appreciative of the recognition for him, his staff, and his players.”

According to the official release, many deserving coaches from across the United States were nominated by their peers, administrators, teachers, studentathletes, and in some cases, competitors from other schools.
