Alyssa Head Takes 3rd In Akron
The Southeast Georgia Soap Box Derby sent their representatives to Akron, OH, last week. More than 300 boys and girls from across the country and as far as Japan participated in the 86th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby for the chance to win $36,000 in college scholarships. Racers between the ages of 7 and 20 spent months building their gravity-powered race cars and competing in local Soap Box Derby competitions to earn their trip to the World Championships at the worldfamous Derby Downs track in Akron.
This year Southeast Georgia Soap Box had just one racer that earned a trophy. In the Rally Super Stock race Alyssa Head of Lyons took third place. Head took her first round battle of two other races with just a .013 second win. In the second round, she defeated a racer out of Fredericsburg, VA, by . 067 seconds to move to the next round. In round three, it was an even closer race with Head winning by .01 seconds over a racer from Hopkinsville, KY, and by .015 seconds over a racer from Bellevue, NE.
That moved Head into the finals of the Rally Super Stock where she had a good showing but finished in third place. The winner of the race was Aden Stewart of Rixeyville, VA. Second place was Diego Juarez of Ogallala, NE, just .02 seconds behind, and then Head in third .041 seconds behind the winner.
Alexis Head and Taylor Copeland also made it past the first round in their respective races, but were both eliminated in the second round.
The Southeast Georgia Soap Box Derby will be back in action when they host their next rally race on August 17-18 at Derby Hill in Lyons at Partin Park. For more information on the rally race contact Jonathan Gordy at 912-293-5763.
