Man Evaluated After Armed Barricade Incident

One man is undergoing mental health evaluations after barricading himself in his home and threatening violence. According to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to 2885 Cedar Crossing Road at around 11:45 a.m. on Monday, July 22, in reference to a reported assault. When they arrived, the deputies located the residence’s owner Tony Ogletree, who advised that his stepson Samuel Kurt Miller – who resided at this address in a pond house behind the main house – had threatened to kill Ogletree while he was working on his motorcycle outside of his shop.
Ogletree told officers that Miller had a pistol in hand as he approached his stepfather, saying he would kill Ogletree and then himself. The stepfather ran to his house as Miller fired a shot and began walking back to the pond house in which he lives.
After seeing Ogletree and the deputy talking outside while he was standing on the pond’s dock, Miller ran into the pond house. Deputies spoke to Miller through the PA speaker on their vehicles, instructing Miller to come outside the home and speak with them.
While attempting to coerce Miller outside, deputies were told by a family member that Miller was suffering from mental health issues, which stemmed from his extensive drug abuse.
Deputies continued to attempt to communicate with Miller, who showed himself at a window and tried to speak with the deputies. He placed both of his hands on the window to show he did not have a weapon, as deputies walked to the window and began talking with him.
While speaking with deputies, Miller continued saying things that did not make sense and were not logical. He told them that he had recently gotten out of prison and was not going back, and that he had a pistol and rifle beside him at the window.
After an hour of communication, Miller complied with the deputies’ instructions and exited the house. He was safely placed under custody and was being prepared for transport when deputies learned that Miller had stolen the pistol from Terry Miller’s home, located at 2853 Cedar Crossing Road.
Miller was transported to a treatment facility to address his mental health issues and will be transferred to the Toombs County Detention Center upon completion of his treatment. He is charged with one count of aggravated assault (felony), two counts possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (felony), and one count of burglary in the first degree (felony).
The Toombs County Sheriff’s Office extended gratitude to Georgia State Patrol Post 18 (Reidsville), the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Region 4 Office (Metter), and Toombs-Montgomery EMS for their response and assistance in the incident.
