CONTEXT

A compilation of quotations on a variety of issues by national, state and regional writers, well-known personalities, just plain everyday people and from various publications collected by the editors of THE ADVANCE.

Quotes for our Times:

Betsy McCaughey, Ph.D, former Lt. Governor of New York State and author of Beating Obamacare: Kamala Harris is a race hustler who will send white men to the back of the line and ignite racial animus.

Harris telegraphed what she would do, given the authority, in a 2020 campaign ad explaining the difference between equality and equity. It pictured a Black man and a white man, and said equality means 'everyone should get the same amount.' But treating everyone equally regardless of race is wrong, she went on, because 'not everybody's starting out from the same place.' Equity means 'we all end up at the same place.'

Byron York, chief political correspondent for The Washington Examiner: Biden gone, Democrats rally around worst possible candidate.

Now that Biden's infirmities have finally caught up with him, Harris appears to have the inside track to the Democratic presidential nomination. The Trump campaign should take her seriously, not because she is a good candidate, but because she will automatically have the vote of the millions of Americans who would vote for anyone other than Trump. That alone means she could win. So her GOP rivals should see the Harris campaign as a formidable opponent. But at the same time, it should be noted — and Harris herself will likely make it clear soon enough — that she is perhaps the worst candidate Democrats could choose to run for president.

Liz Peek, Fox News contributor: Brace yourself, America. With Kamala Harris, Democrats are about to put on an incredible show.

Republicans should take a deep breath and remember: it’s the same Kamala Harris. The only reason the V.P. looks good is that she is now being compared – not to Donald Trump – but to Joe Biden. Rather than a shell of a man who cannot complete a sentence or find his way off the stage, the Democrats can now run a person who can unfortunately complete not just one sentence but quite often a salad full of sentences, many of which turn out to be meaningless.

Is Kamala better than Joe? Absolutely. Is she, on her own merits, a good candidate? Absolutely not.

Judith Miller, political commentator and author: The change voters seek goes beyond the left-right divide.

If, in fact, Americans share Europe’s and Iran’s anti-incumbent instincts, Trump might well be propelled to a landslide victory in November – particularly after the failed assassination attempt. Trump, a convicted felon, could well win despite his nostalgic slogan: Make America Great Again, Again. …

Now that [Biden] has been forced to withdraw by colleagues who persuaded him that his name on the ballot would likely cost Democrats control of both the House and the Senate, Democrats have been scrambling to chart a winning course with Vice President Kamala Harris or another plausible, but unlikely alternative as their nominee. But now, at last, Americans may finally have the choice so many want — two versions of change, rather than the more conventional choice of incumbent versus challenger that Biden’s nomination would have ensured.
