The Montgomery County Board of Elections and Registration held qualifying for special elections for seats on the Uvalda and Higgston City Councils last week. Four citizens qualified for the Uvalda election, but no one stepped up to take the vacant seat on the Higgston City Council.
The deaths of City Councilman William Franklin Rollins and Councilwoman Janice Braddy recently vacated two seats on the Uvalda City Council; Mayor Pro Tem Bennie Sammons also submitted his resignation to the City, vacating a third seat.
Last week, Jeffery Howard Adams, Steve James Calhoun, Tonya Michelle Donaldson, and Stephanie Kerr all threw their names in the hat for the open positions. These individuals will face off in a special election in November, which will run at the same time as the nationwide General Election; the top three candidates with the most votes will take the three seats.
Everyone who is not registered to vote and would like to vote in the special election has until 5 p.m. on October 7 to register. Early voting will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily at the Montgomery County Government Annex from October 15 until November 1. The special election will be held in conjunction with the Presidential and County elections on Tuesday, November 5, with a potential run-off election (if needed) on Tuesday, December 3.
Meanwhile, none of the citizens in Higgston qualified to serve in the seat which was vacated by the resignation of Councilman Mason Powell. Because of this lack of candidates, the Montgomery County Board of Elections and Registration will reopen qualifying for this election at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, until 12 p.m. on Friday, August 16, at the Montgomery County Government Annex at 251 S. Richardson Street in Mount Vernon.
