Christopher Lowe, Government Support Specialist for the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Regional Commission, apprised the Alamo City Council of procedures for a survey project which is required for a federal grant.

During the Council’s August 12 session, Lowe said the plan is for representatives of his agency to conduct house-by-house surveys of Alamo residents in order to determine the city’s eligibility for a federal Community Development Block Grant. The matching grant will fund the upgrades of two lift stations and provide new sewer lines to serve customers who currently lack service. The grant will provide a $1 million matching grant, with the City’s portion amounting to $47,500. The grant application is due by April 2025. The Council approved moving forward with the grant process at its June 17 session.

The Council endorsed the survey and discussed methods for getting the notice about the surveys to city residents, including through letters to wa- ter/sewer customers, the City’s Facebook page, and its electronic sign on Main Street.

In other business, City Manager Jeff Floyd announced an upcoming meeting and public hearing for the county’s Five-Year Master Plan. The meeting, to be sponsored by HOGARC, will be held at Alamo City Hall on Wednesday, August 28, from 2-3:30 p.m. A public hearing will follow at 5 p.m.

The City announced plans for several upcoming events: the City’s 115th Birthday Celebration on Friday, August 16, in downtown Alamo; the annual Wheeler County School Homecoming Parade on September 20; a Trunk-or-Treat and Hayride event on October 31; and the annual Christmas in the City on December 7.
