Ledford Qualifies for Higgston City Council

The Higgston City Council will have a new member in January, as Sarah Ledford has qualified to fill the seat vacated by former City Council member Mason Powell.

Powell resigned earlier this year, leading the Council to hold a special election in November to fill the position. Qualifying was held over a two-week period, as no one qualified the first week, which extended the timeline. Ledford qualified last week as the only candidate in the election, solidifying her future on the Council. Meanwhile, in Uvalda, a special election will be held in November, coinciding with the General Election, as Tonya Michelle Donaldson faces off with Stephanie Kerr for the seat vacated by Councilman William F. Rollins’ death. The winner of this election will serve a one-year term.

Jeffery Howard Adams was the only candidate to qualify to succeed late Uvalda Councilwoman Janice Braddy’s vacant seat, and Steve James Calhoun was the only candidate to qualify seeking the seat vacated by Uvalda Mayor Pro Tem Bennie Sammons’ resignation. These positions are for three-year terms.

Anyone who is not registered to vote and would like to vote in the special election has until 5 p.m. on October 7 to register. Early voting will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily at the Montgomery County Government Annex from October 15 until November 1. The special election will be held in conjunction with the Presidential and County elections on Tuesday, November 5. For more information, call the Montgomery County Board of Elections at (912) 583-2580.
