The Toombs County High School Cross Country teams opened their 2024 season at the Peach State Preview in Hazlehurst, GA, on August 17. Despite the challenging conditions, with hot and humid weather, and facing tough competition from higher-classification schools such as Jones County, Glynn Academy, Veterans, Northside Warner Robins, and Coffee County, both the boys’ and girls’ teams put in a solid effort.

Boys

The boys’ team finished 9th out of 15 teams. Leading the way was Juan Luna, who clocked a strong time of 17:41.50. Kevin Luna followed with a time of 19:29.70, while Luis Valentin finished in 20:22.30. Victor Valentin and Cole Russell rounded out the top five with times of 21:26.30 and 21:28.30, respectively.

Girls The girls’ team also placed 9th, competing against 12 other teams. Noelia Nevarez led the Lady Bulldogs with a time of 27:06.70. Mareli Luna was close behind at 27:50.20, with Deanna Gonzalez (27:59.20), Bryleigh Woods (28:12.20), and Josseline Zamorano (31:44.90) completing the team’s top five finishers.

While both teams acknowledge they aren’t where they want to be yet, they’re focused on improving their times before their next race on August 29 at Dodge County. With the first race under their belts, the Bulldogs are determined to continue pushing forward and making strides in the weeks to come.
