The Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons Soccer team kicked off this year's campaign against Georgia Gwinnett College yesterday. The Barons had their hands full from kick-off as the Grizzlies managed to control possession for the entire first half. The Barons were forced on their heels and had to play defense for much of the game.
The game was kept within reach during the first half thanks to spectacular saves from true freshman goalkeeper Angel Camacho. The freshman did her best to stand in net and keep the Barons in the game. The Barons managed to keep the Grizzlies off the board for almost 20 minutes before the scoreless tie was broken. By the end of the first half, the Barons were down 4-0, and the trouble was just beginning. Camacho faced 12 shots on net, turning aside eight, and made several spectacular saves throughout the first half.
The second half showed much of the same, as the Grizzlies' offense dominated by keeping the ball to the Barons' defensive end. Camacho was pulled after the score went up to 12 to nil. Despite the score, Camacho made incredible save after incredible save. The Grizzlies outshot the Barons 41-0, with 25 shots on net. Camacho made 13 saves on the 25 on net.
The Lady Barons get back on the pitch against Spartanburg Methodist College on August 31, at 7:00 p.m. This will be community appreciation day as we welcome the residents of Toombs and Montgomery Counties out to watch and cheer on the Lady Barons.
