The No. 1 ranked Toombs County High School Bulldogs hit the road for the first time in the 2024 season, facing off against the South Effingham Mustangs from Class 5A. The Bulldogs made a statement, showcasing their dominance on both sides of the ball, along with game-changing special teams plays that sealed the victory.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring early on special teams when Mike Polke returned a Mustang punt all the way to the end zone for the first touchdown, just minutes into the game. That was the only score for the Bulldogs in the first quarter of the game, but in the second quarter they began to pull away from the Mustangs.

On offense, Dabyn Wadley took charge in the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns. He found the end zone on runs of 4 and 20 yards before catching an 8-yard pass from quarterback TJ Stanley with just 30 seconds left in the half, pushing the Bulldogs’ lead to 27-0 at the break.

The Red Bullet defense, which stifled the Mustang offense all night, dominated the second half. The Bulldogs’ defense added to the scoreboard with two interceptions returned for touchdowns by Cornelius Bullard and Kamari Williams. The defense also forced a safety when Hayden Roy pressured the Mustangs into kicking the ball out of the end zone to prevent a touchdown. The Red Bullets held South Effingham to just 9 yards of total offense, securing a commanding 49-0 victory.

Up next for the Bulldogs is a matchup against the Rome Wolves, a powerhouse from Class 5A, this Friday in Rome. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
