The Toombs County High School Cross Country Teams traveled to Eastman this past Thursday to compete in the Dodge County Invitational. The conditions were not ideal, as the weather was extremely hot, but the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs fared well despite the elements.

Girls

The girls finished 5th out of 10 teams competing. Coach Jeremy Moore said, “The girls are still trying to round into form. The heat on Thursday did not do us any favors, but finishing 5th out of 10 teams is something to build on. We have a tendency to ‘run in a pack’ with the girls, and we are waiting for one to jump out, push the pace, and bring the other girls along. We are capable of having a strong season; we just have to get it going at practice and see that pour over into the meets.”

Boys

On the boys’ side, sophomore Juan Luna captured his first varsity individual title, running away from the field and winning the boys’ race by nearly a minute. Senior Kevin Mentado finished 2nd for the Bulldogs and 8th overall. Moises Young, Luis Valentin, and Cole Russell rounded out the top five for the Bulldogs. The five Bulldogs scored high enough to win the meet, taking 1st overall on the boys’ team side.

Coach Moore added, “It was a great day for our boys. We talked all week about knowing that if we ran well, we would have a shot to place high or even win the meet. The boys have responded well to a few tough weeks of training, and it paid off at this meet. Just like the girls, the heat did us no favors, so we did not see personal records, but the boys pushed and ran well enough to bring home 1st place. We have a really deep, strong group of boys this year, and I’m excited about watching them challenge each other and improve this year.”

Toombs County cross country is back in action this Thursday in Statesboro for the Gator Invitational.
